This is Derbyshire --
A HAUL of cosmetics containing potentially harmful ingredients has been seized from a city shop, prompting a leading councillor to warn the public to be vigilant.
Derby City Council's trading standards team found ten products in one city centre shop, five of which were unsafe and contained lead or mercury.
All ten of the products seized, which included skin lightening creams and hair tonics, lacked proper labelling and instructions.
Councillor Asaf Afzal, cabinet member for planning, environment and public protection, urged people to be aware of these potential problems.
He said: "I would urge anyone who is buying a cosmetic product to be aware of potential dangers to their health of using some products, particularly if any of them are produced outside the EEC.
"Products should have clear lists of ingredients and instructions and all of the 10 products had labelling missing.
"It's important products should have the name and address of the manufacturer and to know its country of origin. Some of the products lacked that as well.
"They didn't have warnings on the bottles about over-using certain products or even batch numbers or use-by dates."
Mr Afzal said he wanted to urge people to contact trading standards at the city council if they had any concerns over products on sale.
The shop which was selling the products has not been named because its owners have co-operated with the council and removed the cosmetics from its shelves.
One of these products was 'Kala Kola Hair Tonic. On the packaging it lists one of its ingredients as containing "lead acetate" which could be potentially harmful to customers. The shop no longer sells these products.
All of the products were produced outside EEA (European Economic Area) and therefore do not have to meet cosmetic products safety regulations maintained in this part of the world.
The council has warned that, in some countries outside the EEA, the standards of using some potentially harmful ingredients in cosmetic products are not regulated.
Other products found to contain lead or mercury were Stillman's Skin Bleach Cream, The ultimate fairness cream, Seven Herbal Ubtan with sun screen, Formula AA Arche Pearl Cream and Cinci Brido Whitening Cream.
The products without correct labelling were all of those listed above along with Fair & Lovely Multi Vitamin Cream, Tibet Fairness The Natural Fairness Cream 50g, Olivia Crème Bleach for unwanted hair 17ml, Joy Fairness Cream 50ml and Black Rose Super Hair Tonic 150ml.
