Four generations gather to christen family addition at Pendeen Church in 140-year-old gown This is Cornwall --

FOUR generations gathered at Pendeen Church this month for a special christening, with a gown first worn in 1874.

Tracy Carter and partner Oliver Evans travelled down from Wales for the commemorative day, joining Miss Carter's family, many of whom have been christened and married in the village, as well as godparents from farther afield.

The couple's daughter, eight-month old Ffion Olivia Evans, is the latest in a long line to be christened in Pendeen. Miss Carter said 16 members of her family have been blessed there to date and Saturday, November 9, marked a very moving day.

"It was lovely – it was just so nice to have all the family together and to have it at Pendeen Church, which has got such a longstanding association with my family," she said.

"It was special to have all the generations together. Everyone commented on how uplifting it was and refreshing.

"Hopefully Ffion grows up to be as happy as all my family are."

The Victorian gown was used originally for Harry May by his parents Jane and Nicholas Oats and has continued to be a centrepiece ever since.

Miss Carter said her mum, Jane, was quite affected by the ceremony as she had spent a long time preparing the garment for the occasion.

"Mum got really emotional when we were putting the gown on," she said.

"All the family were really touched. She [mum] had restored it. She hand-washed it as you can't put it in the washing machine.

"It's got huge sentimental value.

"I was so happy to be carrying on the tradition. It means a lot to all of us."

Miss Carter added in 1970 The Cornishman reported her brother, Paul Carter, then wore the gown as it neared its century.

She also said the family has no plans to replace it any time soon.

After the service Miss Carter said everyone congregated at her parents' tea shop in Lelant for a glass of Prosecco to toast Ffion's good health. Reported by This is 4 days ago.
