Shoppers flock to Nottingham for Boxing Day sales This is Nottingham -- Bargain hunters got up before the crack of dawn to hit Nottingham's Boxing Day sales. Some queued from the early hours to be the first to enter the Next sale in the Victoria Centre at 6am today. Fans of Urban Outfitters were then able to begin their shopping in-store at 7am, before the main centre opened at 8am. Jackie Whitlock was already waiting for a bus home to Arnold at 9.30am, after a three-hour blitz of the sales. She said: "I saw the queue at Next and I thought 'forget it'. People were queuing right back to Urban Outfitters at the main entrance. "It was more controlled than in previous years, but there were a lot of people who had been there since 3.30am. "I couldn't bear the thought that I might miss out on a bargain, so thought it was worth a visit." Olivia Siewet, 23, of Netherfield experienced the Boxing Day sales rush for the first time. She braved the hustle and bustle at Next with her mother, Iwona Chlechowitz, 48, who is over visiting from Poland. Ms Siewet said: "It's been very busy but the staff have been really nice. The queuing system was really good. "I've bought some shoes and real leather boots. I also bought some trousers for my daughter. "My mum's here on holiday and she said we need to go to the sales while she is here. Everyone has been really friendly." The John Lewis department store in the Victoria Centre remains closed today, ahead of the beginning of its own in-store clearance sale tomorrow. Tommy Bouwer, 53, of Newark was disappointed to find John Lewis closed, but he still found a bargain or two at House of Fraser in the Victoria Centre. He said: "I've been buying cashmere scarves for next year at 50 per cent off. I also got 60 per cent off some pyjamas. "It's the first time we've ever come into Nottingham on Boxing Day. We thought we'd come and give it a try. "I'm surprised it's not busier." One shop that went against the trend of opening early was the Fopp music store in Queen Street. Staff opened their doors at 11am, having already had a mini sale on Christmas Eve. Manager Dean Wheeler, 33, said: "There's a tradition with Next and some of the other stores to start trading early. "We don't get that massive rush of business in the mornings and normally get a lot of trade from 11am anyway. "We're expecting it to get busy but we've got enough staff to cope." He added: "We did a late shift on the 23rd and were here until midnight re-pricing and getting the stock ready for Christmas Eve. "We've been planning it since mid-December so have been organised. A lot of stock is reduced to half price." Reported by This is 2 days ago.
