Catherine Joyce Jeffery, St Buryan
RELATIVES and friends gathered at St Buryan Methodist Church to say farewell to Mrs Catherine Joyce Jeffery of Springfield, of Trelyon Close, St Buryan who died on Friday, November 1, aged 90.
The Reverend Julyan Drew officiated at the service.
Mr Martin Kevern played the organ and the Reverend Philip Williams gave the eulogy.
The service was followed by interment in St Buryan Cemetery.
Born Catherine Joyce Thomas at Boswarthen Farm, Madron, on September 18, 1923, to Ben and Effie Thomas, Catherine had one brother, Harold Thomas.
She was often seen walking to Madron School daily taking the milk down.
Joyce first played the organ at Madron Chapel at the start of the Second World War. She remained an organist until a few years ago at Treen Chapel.
She worked on the family farm until her marriage to Kenneth Jeffery on September 20, 1947 and moved to Ivy Farm, Treen, where she continued to help on the farm taking out 'croust' to the workmen at harvest time.
She made many friends by taking in bed and breakfast visitors. Many returned to Treen annually for their two weeks' holiday, spending many hot days on Pedn Vounder beach with the family.
Joyce and Kenneth had two children. Harold was born on September 16, 1948, and Caroline, was born on December 29, 1950.
Following Harold and Caroline's marriages, to Denise and Nigel respectively, Joyce was to gain five grandchildren, Neil, Deborah and Hannah, and Claire and Tristan; and subsequently seven great grandchildren, who she was very proud of: Robert, Ruth, Megan, Grace, Lydia, Jack and Verity.
The grandchildren spent many a summer holiday at Ivy Farm. There were many trips to the beach, the meadery and with pocket money to buy sweets at the shop.
One trip they all remember was to St Ives on the train, surfboard in tow.
Joyce was very much a family person and like many of her generation enjoyed the parish feasts, to which all the large family was invited for tea.
Sometimes, over the weekend, 60-plus family members would be entertained to cold meats and salads, trifles and a grand assortment of cakes.
Joyce loved the musicals, both at the Minack and local theatres, travelling to Plymouth each year to the pantomime.
Joyce had great faith and continued to go to Treen Chapel and St Levan until very recently.
She loved to walk to the cliffs at Treen, often with family or friends from the village.
When she moved to St Buryan, five years ago, she joined the Friendship Club and Luncheon Club and enjoyed the company of many of her friends, her last outing being at the Friendship Harvest Festival, when Marlene, her friend and carer for the past two years took her to the harvest celebration.
