Blink a treat for eyes at city theatre This is Plymouth -- TWO shy individuals are about to be flung together. The backdrop to Blink is lonely London where we meet Sophie. Her father made her feel like she was somebody, but now he is dead it is as if she is vanishing. She loses her job because the bosses feel she has a 'lack of visibility'. Meanwhile, Sophie has rented the flat downstairs to Jonah. He has given up his permanent night work and is seeking... something. He has plans to see the world but has got as far as Leytonstone. Odds-on we are heading into rom-com territory with two likeable lost souls who find each other. You might not be surprised to learn that there is the pitter-patter of tiny feet. But they belong to a fox, Scruffilitis. This tale has a darker edge, though. We are told, "This is a true story" at the start. But true in what sense? The themes being looked at including voyeurism and engagement. Isn't it easier to have a relationship with somebody via a screen, switching on and off as you like, rather than up close and personal in real life? Follow Sophie (Lizzy Watts) and Jonah (Thomas Pickles) as they discover their truth. Phil Porter developed his play at London's Soho Theatre where the work enjoyed a sell-out hit in 2012. Audiences also received Blink well at the Edinburgh Festival, and reviews have been favourable. Phil's successes include winning the Bruntwood Playwriting Prize for Blink and Cracks In My Skin and the Arts Council's Children Award for Smashed Eggs. He is now working for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). Pickles and Watts are a couple of new faces who are on the up. He has performed with the RSC and was most recently in Derby Theatre's production of Kes. His telly credits include Channel 4's wonderful Shameless. Lizzy recently starred as Olivia in Filter Theatre's Twelfth Night, which toured the UK and internationally. She has worked largely with new writing companies, including Paines Plough's. The new play has nabokov artistic director and Soho Theatre artistic associate Joe Murphy at the helm. With megamusical The Lion King dominating the Theatre Royal Plymouth's main stage, the Lyric, for the next seven weeks it's a case of Blink and you'll miss it. The low-key drama runs in the second space, the Drum, only from Tuesday-Saturday, January 28-February 1. Reported by This is 3 days ago.
