First-time writer-directors Geoff Moore and David Posamentier wisely cast Bay Area native Sam Rockwell in the lead role as a pharmacist who is essentially ignored/borderline hated by his super-empowered cross-training wife (Michelle Monaghan) and 12-year-old son (Harrison Holzer), who's into heavy metal, wears black, is in trouble at school and generally seems headed to go out in a Columbine-like blaze of gory. Normally, you'd never buy such a white-lab-coat-wearing dweeb engaging in a torrid affair with the hottest woman in town (Olivia Wilde, doing her best Sharon Stone), but Rockwell's measured performance is spot-on, anchoring an uneven film that's in love with its own quirkiness. The film, shot in Maryland, is narrated by Jane Fonda, who does not appear onscreen, and although it's nice to hear her voice, the narration is often unnecessary, merely describing to the audience what they're already looking at.
