A new police community hub has been officially opened in Ferring.

On Thursday (November 12), the volunteers who run the hub were joined by Deputy Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, Chief Inspector Justin Burtenshaw, West Sussex County Council colleagues and members of the local community.

Volunteers form part of the Sussex Police extended policing family and are an important resource, supporting the delivery and continuation of police services. The role of the volunteer is designed to enhance the work of the police and provide additional support in the area where the volunteer lives or works, by working with the local neighbourhood policing team.

There are currently ten volunteers who run the Sussex Police Community Hub in Ferring. Two of them, Wendy and Ray Hughes, have been volunteers in Ferring, originally in the old police box, since 2007. Another volunteer is an ex-special constable and the youngest, Dan Morgan, is in his 20s.

They help with enquiries including lost and found property, assisting with crime reporting and abandoned cars.

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, said: "I was so pleased to help open the new hub based in Ferring Library. It's a great opportunity for the public to meet their local police officers, PCSOs and volunteers. This move is all about putting policing back into the heart of the community and giving the public confidence in Sussex Police as well as supporting the most vulnerable."
