Vet of the Year award for Tim This is Cornwall --

A Westcountry vet has won a top national accolade for his welfare work.

Tim Phillips, of Elm Veterinary Centre in Plymouth, was presented with the Vet of the Year Award 2013 by the Ceva Awards for Animal Welfare.

Tim was nominated by Douglas Hodge, from Pippins cattery, Plymouth, for his outstanding work with animals in Greece.

Tim and his wife, Angie, have used their own money and free time to treat animals on their holidays to Greece for the last 15 years.

The next trip, in May, will be their first to Arta, where the animals are "desperate" for treatment, according to Tim.

The couple attended the awards ceremony, with Douglas and his wife Olivia, at the Burlington Hotel in Birmingham.

Judges, finalists and guests were shown videos of the four finalists' work, before Tim was announced as the winner of the category.

It was the second year of the Ceva awards, which were created to recognise volunteers, children and veterinary professionals, such as Tim, who are dedicated to improving global animal welfare.

Tim said: "Angie and I were both delighted about the award.

"Winning highlights the work that is already going on in Greece, but I also hope it reminds people of what is yet to be done." Reported by This is 7 minutes ago.
