Baker Wins Gatorade NJ Athlete of the Year Award Patch Maplewood, NJ --

Olivia Baker, a student at Columbia High School (CHS), was named the 2012-13 Gatorade New Jersey Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Baker was surprised during Drama class Friday morning, when her coach Lisa Morgan came in -- along with Superintendent Brian Osborne, BOE President Beth Daugherty, CHS Principal Lovie Lilly and Baker's parents -- to announce Baker had received the award.

Watch Patch's video of Baker learning the news, attached to this article.

"Olivia, we're so very proud of you," said Lilly, "and the community stands behind you. So keep running."

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence as well academic achievement and exemplary character, according to a press release. Baker is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Track Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced later in June. If she also wins that, she will be invited to ESPN's "ESPY" awards in the fall.

Baker has won three individual state titles at the Meet of Champions this season. She earned gold in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. In addition to her athletic achievements, she is a violist in the school's chamber orchestra and volunteers for local charities. Reported by Patch 5 hours ago.

Fifteen Minutes of Fame Plane

Fifteen Minutes of Fame Plane Patch East Greenwich, RI --

*By Stew R. Dice-Clay*

On columnist Bob Kerr’s Clemency Coach deserving newsmakers are creatively skewered. We never learn where or how people on that coach get off. Just that they always get off.

Those that take away life lessons from that coach should be commended. Those that don’t may need another kind of trip. Maybe where the innocent and guilty ride together in harmony in helping one another. Perhaps a ride that is cushy and wasteful but somewhat productive so that taxpayers won’t be quite as steamed when they find out they funded it.

Now boarding this private jet on the extended runway. Newsmakers: Please load as much carry-on baggage as your conscience can stand. And welcome aboard the Lear Learning Curve.

To earn a ticket on the Curve you simply need to be in the news within the last 18 months. Celebrities may be local or national. Today’s passengers include Governor Chafee, Deborah Gist, Jessica Ahlquist, Mayor James Diossa, John DePetro, Dan Doyle. Sheldon Whitehouse, Olivia Culpo, Katherine Webb, Brent Musburger, Donald Trump, Oliver Stone, and moderator Mario Lopez … and we’re off –

*Mario* – Governor, now that prom season is over can you explain to me how the topic of dance always seems to set off a new crisis in your state?

*Gover* – Well, first it was the grinding thing in Middletown. Kids there just don’t know how to be subtle like kids in West Warwick do.

*Mario* – What makes the kids in West Warwick so much more sophisticated?

*Gover* – They take classes at R.I. Grinding. It’s right near Papa Gino’s. For ten bucks you can get the Pizza ‘N’ Pole Dance Combo Meal.

*Mario* – Wasn’t the next hornets nest disturbance some kind of father/daughter dance?

*Jessi* – I feel Cranston should continue to allow it provided those in attendance agree to dance on the prayer banner.

*Mario* – Mayor Diossa, how would you go about diffusing such a controversy in Central Falls?

*MayDis* – I would just slick my hair back a little more and try to pass myself off as a Korean rap and dance artist.

*Mario* – The old Psy Fi bait and switch. Say, Oliver, are you still working on that theory about Dennis Rodman as the third gunman in the Kennedy assassination?

*Olive* – No, I actually just got back from Virginia where I discovered that John DePetro’s foot is buried right near his month.

*DePet* – I may have been off on that. But I will say that Katherine Russell claiming not to know anything about her husband’s activities is like Jane Russell claiming not to know anything about her 18-hour bra.

*DanDo* – Is this plane going to Florida?

*Mario* – No. Weren’t you already told not to go there?

*DanDo* – But it’s important. I’ve got a job there consulting alligators on how to swallow people whole before they ever realize they have been taken. I’m lucky I snuck on this plane today cause I told customs that I was Peter Boyle.

*Jessi* – May the Easter Bunny rest his soul.

*Mario* – Can someone fill me in one the National Education Silly LIttle Aptitude Proficiency testing.

*DeGis* – Oh, yeah! The NESLAP. It’s a riot.

*Mario* – What was the first sign of you sensing that your job might be on the line?

*DeGis* – Hearing that my legacy would be as “the lady who influenced a new and improved version of Jennifer Aniston’s ‘90s hairstyle.”

*Brent* – Deborah, I need you to hang onto your job to help me in negotiating my next contract. Either that, or I’m going shopping in Virginia to find a better fitting foot for my mouth.

*DePet* – I had forgotten how you outshamed me.

*Brent* – My unedited inspirational quote was, “For all you young fellas out there, if you earn the position of starting quarterback you get Miss Alabama. If you start at left tackle you get Honey Boo Boo.”

*Mario* – That is so offensive, yet so tempting for the Southern guys. For them Honey Boo Boo is a triple threat; uncivilized, uninhabited and underaged.

*Brent* – You are going to wind up in a Lynard Skynard song, pal.

*KWebb* – If they ever make a Stripes 2 movie, you’ll see me in the mud-wrestling scene versus Brent. Hey, but at least no one took photos of me underage drinking in college.

*OlCul* – Ah, shut up. So what if my dream of winning the triple crown of Miss R.I., Miss Universe and Miss Utah is toast. By the way, I don’t even count Miss America as one of my titles. That was a little stepping stone. It was like my Keno ticket in the Powerball of life.

*Trump* – If OJ gets a new trial, I think I can clear your way to the Utah thing.

*Sheld* – Before people hate on me more than OJ, let me clarify my ill-advised rant. I didn’t mean to say that Republicans are responsible for all these natural disasters. I meant to say that 98 percent of the hot air blowing into the Oklahoma funnel emanated from Rush Limbaugh.

*Mario* – Oliver, any final conspiracy theories before we land?

*Olive* – Yes. I’ve backing off what you had mentioned earlier. I now believe that Dennis Rodman and Alfredo Aceves are the same person. They both chose to wear #91 late in their careers. They act exactly alike. Do the math!

– I don’t think that any of the TV reality shows are staged. I’m confident that people in America really are that desperate and ignorant.

– I believe that the ban on gay scoutmasters is a right-wing conspiracy that will continue until a gay scoutmaster candidate fixes ObamaCare.

– I believe that if Mick Jagger and David Letterman had a baby it would be Sandra Bernhardt.

– I believe that Joan Rivers walked into her plastic surgeon’s office and said, “Can you make me look like Jack Nicholson as The Joker?”

– I believe that the Superman building in Providence should be the state’s third marijuana dispensary.

*Gover* – Great idea. And the building slogan would be “Superman Building – You don’t have to go to the top floor to get high.”

*Olive* – Amen.

*Jessi* – Praise be to Bunny. Reported by Patch 4 days ago.

Oshawa’s Greg Snell snags ‘Best Job in the World’ caring for Australia’s wildlife

Oshawa’s Greg Snell snags ‘Best Job in the World’ caring for Australia’s wildlife When Greg Snell was flown to Australia to interview for the job of wildlife caretaker, he knew exactly what they were going to ask him. What he didn’t know was that he’d have to answer the questions with a 9-foot python named Olivia around his neck.

But what would turn most people to jelly only emboldened the 27-year-old Oshawa man, whose role come December will be to travel around South Australia for six months, caring for all manner of wildlife from kangaroos to koalas.

“It was actually a welcome surprise — it cut out the seriousness and made it a lot more interactive and fun,” said Snell in a phone interview from Sydney, Australia with the Star.

The job is part of a competition dubbed The Best Jobs in the World — part of a marketing attempt by the South Australia Tourism Commission. The competition sought candidates for six jobs ranging from outback adventurer to chief funster, each of which carry a $100,000 paycheque. He beat out more than 600,000 applicants from 196 countries for one of the coveted spots.

Snell will be responsible for cuddling koalas, holding court with sea lions and waking kangaroos on Kangaroo Island, among other things as he works with local tour operators.

He comes equipped with a diploma in adventure tourism from College of the Rockies in British Columbia and a slew of international experience. When he finished high school, Snell chose to head out west and work at a ski hill in B.C. That’s where he first entered the world of adventure tourism and began a career that’s seen him get certification in whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountaineering, scuba diving and kayaking, according to his mother Barbara Oram.

“What was interesting was that when we looked at what he had done over the last nine years, he had been preparing for this job but none of us knew it,” she told the Star from their family home in Oshawa.

Oram heard about her son’s accomplishment first through his Twitter account, where he documents his adventures. Snell will also produce videos and blog entries during his time in Australia.

“It’s just fabulous. He had done the best he could and it’s just so wonderful … I remember emailing him that morning … It is so wonderful when your kid really delivers everything they’re looking for,” she said.

Snell, who currently works as an adventure tour leader based in South America, was the only Canadian to qualify as one of the 18 finalists flown to Australia for interviews and a series of challenges. He chronicled the whole trip through videos and blog posts on his website.

One of the group’s adventures involved travelling off the coast of Port Lincoln, in South Australia, to swim with the sea lions.

“When you go to visit the sea lions and go swimming with them, they’re in a very contained bay. That’s where the young juveniles learn how to hunt and fish,” said Snell. “You feel like you’re a guest in their home. When you jump in there to go swimming, they’re very curious about who you are and what you’re doing there.”

He said the little lions would play with the swimmers and inspect them up close.

Snell will tour more of Australia and meet people he will be working with before returning to Canada for a break. He takes over as wildlife caretaker Dec. 1. Reported by Toronto Star 7 hours ago.

Karen Stintz off and running in Toronto mayoral race: Hepburn

$

Karen Stintz off and running in Toronto mayoral race: Hepburn As much as she might deny it, Karen Stintz is already off and running hard to unseat Rob Ford and become Toronto’s next mayor.

Although the election isn’t until October 2014, the TTC chair has clearly made up her mind to enter the race against Ford and Olivia Chow, the NDP MP who leads in early polls and is fully expected to join the campaign.

In the past few weeks, Stintz has begun in earnest to build her campaign team, which is led by an experienced Conservative election organizer, enlisted a new speech coach, recruited key policy advisers and kick-started a concerted drive to meet with senior local leaders in business, the media and community groups.

“The response to Karen so far has been terrific,” says the veteran political organizer who is heading her campaign in its initial stage.

“People like her theme of fiscal responsibility and they like the idea of having a mayor who knows they have to respect voters and respect the image of the city,” says the political consultant, who spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Stintz has long been seen as a possible mayoral candidate. First elected to city council in 2003 in Ward 16 Eglinton-Lawrence, she gained an early following for her vocal opposition to many of then-mayor David Miller’s initiatives. She considered running for mayor in the 2010 race, but didn’t feel the time was right.

During Ford’s early days in office, Stintz was considered a key part of his team. She said repeatedly that she would never run against the mayor.

How times have changed!

Now the mayor hates Stintz, mainly because of her opposition to his fanciful dream of building subways to Scarborough. Councillor Doug Ford calls his brother Rob’s decision to appoint Stintz as TTC chair his “biggest mistake” as mayor.

In the coming campaign, Stintz faces several tough challenges, including voter recognition, fundraising and the Fords.

The latest polls place her a distant third behind Chow and Ford, with barely 16 per cent support.

Despite his recent problems, Ford remains a formidable candidate with an unshakable core of supporters. In a crowded field, he would likely win re-election. To overtake him, Stintz must win the backing of enough centrist and conservative residents who voted for Ford in 2010, but are now fed up with the mayor, to overcome Ford’s 30 per cent hardcore supporters.

And to beat Chow, Stintz must prove she is a better “coalition candidate” than the left-wing NDP MP.

In recent weeks, Stintz’s team has developed a first-phase campaign strategy designed to carry her between now and early January when the race officially starts.

First, Stintz is working with a new Toronto-based speech coach. Stintz talks too fast and her voice is often shrill, something she acknowledges. The coach is training her to slow down and get her message out more effectively. In 2008, Stintz was criticized for spending $4,500 (U.S.) of her office budget for public speaking lessons from an American vocal coach.

Second, Stintz has selected her main election themes. She will campaign as a moderate conservative who is fiscally responsible, a city builder and a leader voters can respect. She backs the OneCity transit plan, a $30-billion, 30-year program to extend subway, LRT and bus service to the far reaches of the city, which she hopes will attract suburban support. Also, she will oppose jets at the Toronto island airport, a strategy to gain favour with downtown voters who once backed Miller.

Third, Stintz has pulled together an advisory team that will help develop a detailed campaign platform on everything from taxes to waterfront development.

Fourth, she has launched a program of private meetings with top executives from local media outlets, law firms and business groups. For example, she met earlier this week with local leaders at a private event at the Albany Club, a prominent Conservative landmark.

Fifth, she is raising her profile by meeting with large and small neighbourhood groups. “We are getting her out as much as possible,” the campaign consultant said. “She is listening a lot and outlining her vision of the city.”

It’s an ambitious strategy and, with a bit of luck, Stintz may surprise a lot of skeptics.

Bob Hepburn’s column appears Thursday. *bhepburn@thestar.ca * Reported by Toronto Star 4 days ago.

Patch Chatham, NJ --

Chatham Patch has made an interactive map showing where the graduates of the class of 2013 from Chatham High School will go to college.

Of this year's 279 graduates, 268 have shared their college destination.

Yale University is the top-ranking Ivy League college on the list of college destinations. Dartmouth University and the University of Pennsylvania are also on the list, along with Amherst, Colby, Hamilton, Middlebury and Trinity Colleges.

A total of 39 students will remain in New Jersey for school. Nine students will attend the County College of Morris, and 11 will attend Rutgers University—10 at the New Brunswick campus, one in Newark. One student will attend The College of New Jersey, two will attend Drew University. Two will attend Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, and one each will attend Monmouth University and Montclair State University.

Most graduates opted to stay in the eastern US, most commonly in Pennslyvania, where 49 students will travel to for college. Villanova University is the most popular destination in the Keystone State, with seven students heading to the four-year Catholic university. Other destinations include Penn State University at both University Park and Altoona, Susquehanna University, Lehigh and Lafayette University, Saint Joseph's University and Bucknell University.

One lucky woman will attend Bryn Mawr College, this reporter's alma mater and a Seven Sisters school. She will have some company at nearby Haverford College, which has a cooperative program with Bryn Mawr and has one graduate from Chatham High's class of 2013 attending next year. Another similarly fortunate woman will attend Vassar College, another of the Seven Sisters.

Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia are other popular destinations, with 13, 18 and 9 graduates attending, respectively. Delaware, Connecticut and Vermont are also strongly represented on the map.

Another 29 students will go to college in New York, including at Fordham University, Ithaca College, New York University and Syracuse University.

A total of eight students will go to this reporter's home state of California for college at schools such as Santa Clara University, Scropps and Pomona Colleges and the University of California at Berkeley. Three others will go to Colorado and two in Oregon.

Two students will attend college internationally, one at the London College of Fashion in England and one at Concordia University in Montreal.

New York and Hong Kong--Media OutReach--15 May, 2013-- New York-based fashion brand alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet and Asia's leading retail, brand management and distribution company ImagineX Group announced today an exclusive strategic partnership to develop the brand in Greater China and Southeast Asia through the opening of 23 points of sale over the next five years.

ImagineX will commence the rollout with the first free-standing alice + olivia store in Hong Kong's International Financial Centre (ifc) in June with more stores in Hong Kong, mainland China, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore to follow.

alice + olivia was launched in 2002 and has since grown to more than 800 points of sale in more than 50 countries. The brand first entered Greater China through a wholesale relationship with ImagineX's sister company, the iconic, luxury department store Lane Crawford, in 2008 and has been one of the best performing contemporary brands in its stores in Hong Kong and China. The China retail rollout is a significant driver in an international expansion plan.

Stacey Bendet, CEO and Creative Director, alice + olivia says: "China is the most exciting area to me right now! It's amazing for me to have the opportunity to introduce the world of alice + olivia to a culture and woman that I have been fascinated by and admired for a long time. It's like being able to introduce yourself to someone you've always wanted to meet."

alice + olivia President, Deanna Berkeley added: "As our brand continues its global expansion, we're thrilled to announce a strategic partnership with ImagineX, a leader in the Asian market and an expert in brand development. The partnership with ImagineX provides an ideal platform to build on our current success within Asia. The fashion savvy generation emerging out of Greater China is seeking new ways to express their individuality, and ImagineX's wealth of expertise is the perfect vehicle to bring our brand's unique vision and fresh sensibility to this consumer. We anticipate the ImagineX partnership will account for up to 20% of our international business within the next 5 years."

ImagineX was the first to market with luxury brands in China in 1992, and has spent the past five years building a new generation designer and contemporary fashion business to complement its luxury and lifestyle business to realise the opportunity in the fast-growing affluent middle class that aspires to international fashion.

ImagineX's Vice Chairman & CEO Balbina Wong says, "alice and olivia is a rising star internationally and we're excited to be bringing a new generation designer to a new generation of fashion customers, at a time when they can grow together.

The brand has enormous potential in this market. It is feminine and at the same time eclectic; it has personality and a lifestyle, and it is accessible to the customer who wants to express herself through fashion. And alice + olivia's clear and consistent branding and iconic retail concept ensures that it is easily remembered, which is crucial in an incredibly fast and competitive market such as China," Ms Wong added.
