Prout Girls Advance; Boys Play Tonight Patch Narragansett - South Kingstown, RI --

WAKEFIELD – Senior Maddie Hagerty and junior Olivia Hirst combined for 30 points Wednesday night as the No. 8 Prout Crusaders hit a slew of open shots in a 58-45 win against No. 9 West Warwick in a preliminary round game of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division II girls’ basketball playoffs.

Hagerty finished with 16 points, using a variety of head fakes, spins and drives to get free in the paint. The senior co-captain also had a block and a steal.

Prout head coach Phil Quinn said Hagerty was a game-time decision following an injury suffered in the regular season finale.

“I knew she would play, but I didn’t know how long she could play,” he said, likening her to an NBA player. As a result, he said they kept her out of most practice drills this week, in order to preserve her health and stamina.

Hirst did most of her damage from outside, as she was left wide open for jumpers throughout most of the night. The sophomore finished with 14 points off the bench.

“Olivia is coming along,” Quinn said of the sophomore, describing her as an unselfish player still learning the game that sometimes had to be encouraged to shoot more.

“In sixth and seventh grade, she was one of the best gymnasts in the state, and then she grew.”

Prout took an early 9-3 lead, thanks to buckets from Hagerty inside and senior co-captain Brittany Donovan outside. The Wizards got within four points at various points in the first half, but by the six-minute mark, Prout took an 11-point lead and wasn’t seriously challenged.

The Crusaders led 32-19 at the half, and put the game out of reach with a run early in the second.

After West Warwick scored the half’s point with a free throw, Prout scored the next 12 points and led by as many as 23 in the second half. The Wizards got the lead under 20 only in the game’s final five minutes, when Prout subbed in junior varsity players and the Wizards pressed aggressively.

Prout plays at 6 p.m. Sunday against No. 1 Rogers (16-0 Division II).

“There’s no pressure on us right now,” Quinn said of facing Rogers. “I’ve been in that spot as the hunted, it’s tough … I have an idea [for matching up with the undefeated Vikings] and we’ll see if we execute.”

*Donovan Commits to D-II Nichols College*

According to The Providence Journal, Donovan will be continuing her basketball career at Division II Nichols College. The South County Independent also had a piece by Bill Koch on Donovan in last week’s edition.

Quinn told The Journal that Donovan played AAU ball for Alice Mullen, the head coach at Nichols. Donovan is from Middletown.

*Boys’ State Tournament*

The Crusaders are seeded No. 13 and play No. 4 Cumberland at Roger Williams University 8 p.m. Thursday. If the Crusaders upset Cumberland, then they play in the quarterfinals against either No. 5 North Smithfield or No. 12 Shea on Sunday at Alumni Hall on the Providence College campus.

Prout has never won a state or division title in boys’ basketball. The Crusaders came closest in 2006-07, finishing as Division III runners-up.

The Narragansett and South Kingstown boys’ basketball teams did not qualify for their division tournaments, or the open state tournament.

Already, there has been one upset and one near-upset in the state tournament. No. 1 Classical barely got past a talented No. 16 West Warwick squad, 50-47. And No. 2 La Salle was upset by No. 15 Bishop Hendricken, 59-54.

The two other games played on Wednesday went chalk, as No. 8 Westerly beat No. 9 North Providence 52-48, and No. 7 Hope beat Coventry 65-63.

The other match-ups tonight:

· No. 5 North Smithfield plays No. 12 Shea at 6 p.m. at Roger Williams University.
· No. 6 Mt. Pleasant plays No. 11 Barrington at 6:30 p.m. at CCRI Warwick.
· No. 3 North Kingstown plays No. 14 Cranston West at 8:15 p.m. at CCRI Warwick.

History Not Lost on Anne Arundel County Students Patch Pasadena, MD --

Many people still remember the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union like it was yesterday but to students in middle and high school, the decades-long conflict that ended years before they were born is nothing but history.

Miranda Forbes and Stryker Parlett, eighth-graders at Central Middle School in Edgewater, were two of more than 50 students honored Thursday night at Old Mill High School for their National History Day projects. Their projects focused on the Soviet launch of the Sputnik satellites, during the Cold War space race.

"It was really interesting to see just how just much the Soviet Union had accomplished," Stryker said.

"We [Americans] always think that we are quite the superpower of the world," Miranda added. "But really, during the space race, we were challenged a lot by the Soviet Union technologically."

Miranda and Stryker were just two of more than 500,000 students across the country who created projects for National History Day. The national competition is held annually at the University of Maryland at College Park in June.

The following regional first- and second-place winners will go onto the state competition on April 27 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County:

Class act: Is Olivia Colman Britain's most versatile actress?

$

Olivia Colman has the fear – the one actors get when they don't have another job lined up. "Maybe I've had a good run of it and now it's all going to stop," she says. Right now such a dismal outcome is highly unlikely, as Colman seems to be everywhere – as Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) visiting Bill Murray's Franklin D Roosevelt in Hyde Park on Hudson, as a foul-mouthed marriage counsellor in the British rom-com I Give It a Year, and as Nick Frost's sister in the eagerly anticipated dance comedy Cuban Fury. Domestic violence workshops are helping to change teenage behaviour

Sexual abuse and teenage girls are in the news, which makes the work of the domestic violence charity Tender even more relevant

A group of teenagers is looking at a series of photocopied photographs – a girl crying, an angry looking boy, a lost set of keys – and working them into a story about how violence might flare up between a couple. Rahsaan Fleming, 14, says he has heard his friends use the kinds of excuses the group is discussing. "You do get guys saying these things," he says, "but I hadn't really thought anything of it before."

Fleming is a one of several Year 10 pupils at the Harris Academy Merton, in Mitcham, Surrey, taking part in a drama workshop run by the domestic violence charity Tender on a recent rain-swept Friday morning. The questions: what does a bad relationship look like? How do you tell your boyfriend you don't like him reading your emails? What do you say to a friend whose boyfriend has been hitting her and then telling her it's all her fault? The aim: to help young people to distinguish healthy relationships from unhealthy ones.

Tender has been using drama as its means of education from its formation in 2003. Beginning with one workshop in a youth centre, the charity has grown exponentially: in 2012, Tender worked in 112 schools and pupil referral units and 52 youth centres around London. Now, in its 10th year, the work of this small but determined charity has never seemed more necessary after a recent spate of statistics about sexual abuse and intimidation suffered by teenage girls. In 2009, a landmark NSPCC study found that a quarter of girls aged 13 to 17 had experienced some form of physical violence from their partners; a staggering three-quarters of them had experienced emotional abuse, from constant criticism to intimidation. Coercive behaviour was also a major problem: the study found that girls were often "under constant surveillance" through mobile phones, text messaging and the internet.

In 2011, Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, confirmed that girls aged between 16 and 19 are now more at risk of domestic violence than women in any other age group. On Valentine's Day, the Home Office launched a three-month campaign against teenage relationship abuse, following similar campaigns in 2010 and 2011; MP Stella Creasy also called on parliament to make sex and relationship education, of the sort given by Tender, compulsory in schools as a means of eliminating violence against women.

Even the terminology is to change: next month, the Home Office's official definition of "domestic violence and abuse" will be widened to include abuse experienced by girls aged 16 and 17. Those girls will then have access to services, such as women's refuges, previously denied them.

What makes Tender's work so important is that the charity operates at the level of prevention rather than cure. Andre McLeod offers a neat summary of the power of Tender's workshops. Now 22, he got involved with the charity several years ago after leaving prison; he is now a youth ambassador for Tender. "When I first heard about what Tender did, using drama to talk about abusive relationships," he says, "I was sceptical. But I've seen it work: young people start to think differently about how they are with their girlfriends and boyfriends. I did that myself: I started to look again at some of the things I was doing and saying in my own relationship."

At the Harris Academy Merton, the group are looking at some of the excuses an abuser might use for violence – from "Treat them mean, keep them keen" to "I hit my girlfriend because my dad used to hit my mum"– and learning that none of these excuses is valid; that every abuser has a choice. On week four of a five-week programme, the message seems to be sinking in. Two pupils act out a scene in which a boy tells his girlfriend that he's sorry he hit her, but he can't help it. Rating this relationship on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being very good and one very bad, most of the pupils put it at a solid one or two.

Olivia Henry-Alleyne, 14, adds that name-calling – an important part of the spectrum of misogynistic behaviour experienced by teenage girls – is a big problem. "You hear girls getting called 'slag' all the time," she says. "I wouldn't put up with it, though. I wouldn't have put up with it before the workshop, but I definitely wouldn't now."

The group's drama teacher, Victoria Bradley, tells me later that at first, not all the children were quite as on message as they seem now. "In the first session, you could see some of the boys looking quite uncomfortable," she says. "You do hear them using bad language about girls, or making out that violence is OK. Since the workshops, there's been a tangible change in the way they behave."

For Tender, that means a job well done. "People can underestimate what a difference it makes for young people just to talk about what a good relationship looks like," says Doireann Larkin, the charity's campaign manager. "But often they've normalised all kinds of strange things. A girl might think that her boyfriend grabbing her by the throat is completely normal. Our job is to show her that it's not."

'Jerseylicious' Drama Mars Photos Shoots Patch Bridgewater, NJ --

With the show's move to Sunday, this week's episode of "Jerseylicious" focused on the photo shoots arranged for Anthony Lombardi's planned book on New Jersey's history told through style.

Lombardi brought all the stylists from his salon, Gatsby owner and Bridgewater resident Gayle Giacomo's salon and Glam Fairy Alexa Prisco together to pose in different photos for the shoot.

"My main worry about the shoot was the fact that we had so many shots and scenes to get with only two days to get them," Montville High School graduate Olivia Blois Sharpe said of the process in the "Jerseylicious" blogs. "I'm a perfectionist, so I wasn't cool with allowing any of the shots to be half-assed—especially since my name was attached to the book."

Giacomo herself made an appearance as the NJ Devil, and her daughter, and Gatsby manager, Christy Pereira, also posed for a photo with her two children.

And of course the drama between Gigi Liscio, Tracey DiMarco and Sharpe continued as they tried to avoid each other at the photo shoot, while also airing their dirty laundry with those who hadn't heard the details of their ending friendship, including Prisco.

Prisco and Pereira had a moment of friendship after a previously tumultous relationship that included jabs at the latter following and during her pregnancy. But it seems Prisco has recently seen the light, as she is pregnant now herself.

"I don't want negative energy in my life or negativity around a pregnant person, so I wanted to make sure that we really went forward on a different foot and put all of our old drama behind us," Pereira said in the "Jerseylicious" style blogs. "I don't think it's fair or good for anybody to be so negative. She did that to me when I was pregnant, and I'd never want to do that to her or have our kids be around such negativity."

"Jerseylicious" airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on the Style Network. Reported by Patch 15 hours ago.
