A'lante Flamenco Dance Ensemble Tours Texas with "The Red Shoes: A Flamenco Fairytale"
Austin-based flamenco theater company adds a new Central Texas date to a statewide tour of their critically-acclaimed show. They will be at the Temple Cultural Arts Center April 28, 2013.
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) March 20, 2013
A'lante Flamenco Dance Ensemble, Texas' own touring flamenco theater company, will bring its acclaimed show “The Red Shoes: A Flamenco Fairytale” to Temple's Cultural Activities Center on Sunday, April 28, at 5:30pm. Additional dates, including Houston and San Angelo, are set to follow this spring and summer.
The Austin-based company, formed in 2011, performs both traditional and contemporary Spanish flamenco with a modern twist. The 12-member group is directed by choreographer/artistic director Olivia Chacón. The company debuted “The Red Shoes” to sold out audiences at the Rollins Theater of the Long Center in Austin in October, 2012, and has presented it in the Cameo Theater in San Antonio, as well as San Antonio's Luminaria Festival. Critic Jasmina Wellinghof of the San Antonio Express-News named “The Red Shoes: A Flamenco Fairytale” one of the city's best dance shows of 2012, noting: “Inspired by the familiar Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale... the piece was a creative foray into incorporating flamenco in a conceptual theatrical work that engaged on all levels: music, story interpretation and dancing…Dancing up a storm, Chacon beautifully conveyed both the protagonist’s exhilaration and subsequent disenchantment...intense, classy dancing.”
Of her choreography, the Austin-American Statesman's Jeanne Claire van Ryzin wrote: “Olivia Chácon proved just how flexible flamenco’s centuries-old movement and rhythm vocabulary remains. Dancing to live musical accompaniment, Chácon, joined by three female dancers, distilled traditional flamenco to an angular essence, then burnished it with contemporary touches before adding back the traditional clattering shoes.”
In addition to “The Red Shoes” A'lante will present “Dark Sounds/Sonidos Negros,” a suite of six dances inspired by traditional flamenco musical forms...with a twist. Musical director Isaí Chacón leads a group of six of Texas' best flamenco musicians playing original compositions for both “Sonidos Negros” and “The Red Shoes.”
Directors Olivia and Isaí Chacón returned to Austin after four years living in Madrid, Spain, in 2010. They immediately opened Austin's first flamenco studio, Flamencura Music and Dance, where they offer dance and music lessons to students of all ages. Tickets for the Sunday, April 28 performance at the Temple CAC will be on sale April 1 through Temple CAC and alanteflamenco.com.
Ticket prices: Advance Purchase: $21, $17 Seniors, students and military with ID, children under 12.

Lymphoma Survivor On a Trip to Paris via San Carlos

As a first stop on her way to Paris, 17-year-old lymphoma survivor Alison will visit the San Carlos headquarters of LUV footwear.
She dreamed of visiting Paris . . . and of shoe shopping.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Greater Bay Area is making it happen, with a visit to LUV footwear part of the dream.
Alison, an Oakland resident, has dreamed of visiting Paris since she was a little girl.
Partly, she wanted to visit famous sites like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, but she also dreamed of shopping—specifically shoe shopping.
In choosing this wish, Alison wanted to “reach for the stars,” according to her mom, Melissa.
Now in remission from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Alison recently completed a very difficult chemotherapy course that made her feel like last summer and the first half of her senior year in high school were “taken away by cancer.”
An avid shopper, she looks forward to visiting small boutiques as well as eating some of what France is known for: cheese, fresh bread, and pastries.
After all the “emotional stress” of treatment, Alison is “looking forward to something uniquely special. Her wish being granted to go to Paris just makes the losses of the past dim a bit more, and she feels special to be given this unique wish,” says her mom.
As a special send off for her weeklong visit to Paris, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area has teamed up with LUV Footwear to give Alison a preview of what shoe design and creation entails.
Alison, her mother and brother will visit the San Carlos headquarters of LUV Footwear on March 22, where they will meet with CEO Michael Toschi and Director of Design, Caroline Cecil.
In addition to visiting the showroom, Toschi and Cecil will explain how a shoe is made, and give her a presentation on how the LUV Dream Flat collection was conceived and brought through to production. Alison will also be taking a few pairs of Dream Flats with her on her trip to Paris.

Jessica Hynes feels blue at RTS awards | Media Monkey
*Love is in the effing air
*
There was only one moment on the lips of assorted hacks, hangers-on and execs at Tuesday night's RTS Television programme awards – and it wasn't the on-air remarks of Coronation Street's William Roache (Ken Barlow) hours beforehand. Nope, it was the show-stealing acceptance speech from Twenty Twelve star Jessica Hynes. "How can anybody judge Ruth Jones, Jack Whitehall, Jessica Hynes? How do you fucking judge that, I really don't know. By height?" started Hynes. So far, so unremarkable. Then Hynes turned to Jack Whitehall, who she beat to the comedy performance award: "No, I do like Jack, I do like Jack, but you are young and you are male. No, you are quite funny, you are quite funny. You got a long way fucking to go, a long way to go my friend. But yeah. Not bad. You're okay." By this point, Hynes had been on stage a good few minutes as presenter, Jo Brand, began to look ever more nervous from the sidelines. But Hynes continued: "I love television. I love it. I love television. From the age of six months, my mother sat me in front of the test card, she did. She was a bad mother. I love television, I love it and everyone goes on about film. They are like 'films' – fuck film. Fuck films. Oh 'I make a film, I make a film' – fuck them. 'I make a film, my God, I make a fucking film' – who gives a fucking shit? I couldn't give a shit. I don't give a fucking shit. I don't give a shit. Television is my fucking heart. It is my fucking heart. I love it. I love it." We think she loves it.
*Added interest
*
Hynes' "fuck film" became a recurring theme of the night, with other award winners using it. Collecting the prize for best entertainment performance for the 12th, yes 12th, series of I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here, Declan Donnelly said: "We did a film, Alien Autopsy. But fuck film. Jessica, you know what I'm talking about. I'll see you in the bar." Monkey did in fact see Jessica later in the bar, along with her co-star Hugh Bonneville, who was asking the star of Channel 4's Bank of Dave, Dave Fishwick, about his interest accounts. Dave told him there's a waiting list to join. "Nobody jumps the queue ahead of anyone else," Dave told Monkey. Quite right too.
*Colman's speech is mustard
*
A close runner-up for best speech was new national treasure Broadchurch star, Olivia Colman, who won best female actor. She asked the audience if she could tell them "something embarrassing" about her husband: "When the Olympics were on screen a minute ago and there was the picture of Mo Farah, he went: 'It's Mo Mowlam'!" Taxi for Colman.
*Bean there, not done that
*
Not often hard-nosed television executives go "aaah" at a speech at the RTS awards. But there were two outbursts of sentimentality this year. The first was when sports legend Dave Gordon won the lifetime achievement gong and said: "I can die a happy man." The second was when a humble Sean Bean won best actor and said: "I've never won anything before." Monkey swears there was barely a dry eye in the house. Reported by guardian.co.uk 6 hours ago.

After months of anticipation and impassioned guessing from fans, Law & Order: SVU will finally reveal Det. Benson's mystery man on Wednesday's episode (9/8c on NBC). When Braugher was first cast early last season, speculation quickly arose that his character might become something more than a colleague - and occasional rival - to Benson. It's been 13 years since Olivia first hooked up with her NYPD colleague way back in Season 1, during what she called a drunken one-night stand. [...] while it might be hard to remember the duo's brief courtship at the start of the series, it's hard to forget that kiss they shared when Cassidy was in the hospital after being shot while undercover. Benson was there by Amaro's side when his wife was overseas, then when she left, and also when he came under suspicion by the NYPD for his friendship with a prostitute who was later murdered. Technically, Amaro was the one inquiring about Benson's new mystery man, but maybe that was the show's way of throwing fans, and the other people at the crime scene, off the scent? Scariest TV and movie serial killers The man who was the brash, pushy outsider ADA not so long ago has quickly worked his way into the squad's inner circle, especially with Olivia, because of his passion. After 12 seasons of sharing a close partnership and a rare friendship, maybe Stabler finally thought it was the right time to make a move now that he and Olivia aren't working together anymore. Frome Festival Announces Headline Acts for 2013
This is Somerset --
As the Frome Festival 2013 brochure heads closer and closer to the printing press they share some of the fantastic acts that they have lined up for this years festival with us.
The Festival is delighted to welcome comedians Phill Jupitus and Rich Hall to Frome this summer. Top notch funny men, straight off the telly and on to a stage nearby. They'll be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten's birth with a semi-staged version of his opera, 'The Turn of the Screw' at Cooper Hall, in collaboration with Bath Philharmonia; expect a sixteen piece chamber orchestra and ghostly goings on. For real opera lovers there'll also be a rare chance to hear world-renowned bass-baritone and great favourite of Britten, John Shirley-Quirk, put six talented young singers through their paces in a 'TheTurn of the Screw' masterclass.
The Festival is also celebrating a 21st birthday for stones, 'ECOS' stones to be exact. Twenty one years ago this summer these massive monoliths were carted across Europe to their final resting place in Frome, where they form the backdrop to the ECOS amphitheatre, snug beside the Merlin Theatre. Join them there for a night under the stars with The Afrobeat Messengers. John Power will be here too, formerly of the LA's and CAST, he returns to the Cheese and Grain with a pared down acoustic set. Expect alchemy. Expand your musical horizons with alt-folk rising star, Olivia Chaney, hailed by Jarvis Cocker as 'one to watch', she'll be playing solo at Cooper Hall. Look out too for pianist Ashley Wass, currently making waves on the international music circuit. He'll be bringing Beethoven, Barber and Liszt to Cooper Hall. Don't miss. And to round off the ten day extravaganza that is Frome Festival they'll have Hank Wangford to see everyone out with style. He'll be partying hard at the Cheese and Grain. Do join him.
If Words are your thing the Festival has them in abundance this year. Novellist Michelle Roberts will be joining entrants of the 'Frome Festival Short Story Competition' to award the prizes for best entries. Writers can also come face to face with literary agents, rattle off haikus and write flash fiction for prizes at Rook Lane Chapel. The Archangel is hosting poetry, with the effervescent 'Hip Yak Poetry Shack', featuring Johnny Fluffypunk and friends. National treasure, Ian McMillan will be teaming up with his mate, Luke Carver-Goss at the Merlin to bring us 'words, music, glee and delight', and dear festival friend, Prunella Scales, will be on hand breathe life into the poems of Leo Aylen, live at Rook Lane Chapel.
Aside from these headliners visitors can enjoy an amazing array of events, including the annual Food Feast curtain-raiser, mysterious tunnelling, secret gardens, fabulous art at The Black Swan and Toolshed galleries, sculptors, open studios and hands-on opportunities. None of them costing the earth. Prices range from free to middling, with plenty in between. Keep bang up to date with all the latest festival news on twitter, facebook and via the Festival website. Listen out for Festival Up-dates on Frome FM. And bag yourselves a copy of 2013 Festival Brochure. Available mid-May, and featuring a front cover by the ever-inventive Sholto Walker.

Today is Election Day in Port Chester: Vote for Mayor, 6 Village Trustees

Today is Election Day in Port Chester.
Registered voters can cast their ballots from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. to decide who will be the village's next mayor and who will fill all six trustee seats on the Port Chester village Board of Trustees.
While perennial issues such as taxes and enforcement of local building and zoning codes are key issues in the 2013 campaign in Port Chester, clearly the hottest issue for residents and candidates has been the fate of the former United Hospital site just off Boston Post Road.
At the heart of the campaign has been debate over which candidates would do the best job for Port Chester in working with Starwood Capitol Group, owner of the former hospital site, in redeveloping the property.
Residents throughout the village differ on what should should happen to the former hospital site, with some urging the return of a medical facility to other suggesting a hotel, convention center or other regional businesses. The latest proposal by Starwood called for 820 residential units on the site - which raised many concerns that such a development would bring many more families with children to Port Chester and worsen crowding at local public schools.
From the current Board of Trustees, six of the seven membrers are seeking re-election. Trustee John Branca is not running.
In the race for mayor, incumbent Democrat Dennis Pilla is being challenged by Republican Neil Pagano, who is the current chairman of the Port Chester Industrial Development Agency.
Although today is Election Day, Port Chester residents have been able to cast their ballots through advance voting that opened last Tuesday and ran until Saturday. The tallies from the advance voting will be added to today's tally to determine the winners.
In the election, Port Chester has a cumulative voting system for the trustees race, meaning voters can cast their six ballots any way they want. For example, voters can cast all six ballots for one trustee candidate, or they can spread those votes out for several candidates.
The mayor's race, however, does not involved with the cumulative voting - residents can cast just one vote in the race for mayor.
*Running for trustee seats are:*
Gregory Adams, D
Incumbent Daniel Brakewood, D
Gene Ceccarelli, Pride in Port Chester party
Incumbent Bart Didden, C, I
Rico Dos Anos, C

Port Chester Village Clerk Janusz R. Richards said there is one change in the polling places for this election. He said residents of District 16 in Port Chester will be voting at Antioch Christian Church, 25 King St., instead of at the Don Bosco Center as they did in the November 2012 elections.
If you are not sure yet who to vote for, the League of Women Voters conducted candidates forums for mayor and the trustee seats, with both forums video recorded. Click here to watch the videos of those forums.
If you are not sure where you are supposed to vote, an online directory created by the New York State Board of Elections can be used to look up your polling place. Click here for that directory.
