Will Seventh Son bear only a faint family resemblance to the books?

Hollywood has worked its magic on Joseph Delaney's source material, infusing its Lancashire setting with swords-and-sorcery glitz. Diehard fans are reading t' riot act

With Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy already set to equal the box-office success of the Kiwi film-maker's Lord of the Rings triptych and Game of Thrones storming the small screen, it ought to be a golden age for swords and sorcery. In reality, Hollywood tends to throw us the occasional fantasy flop (2006's Eragon, 2011's inferior Conan the Barbarian remake) and the odd attempt to push fairytale fare through a high-fantasy filter (last year's Snow White and the Huntsman or this year's Jack the Giant Slayer).

Sergei Bodrov's Seventh Son, for which the first trailer dropped earlier this week, at least looks like an attempt to revisit traditional 80s-style swords-and-sorcery fantasy in the style of Willow or Dragonslayer. The film's sumptuous cast features the Dude and his sometime paramour (Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore) as sorcerer Master Gregory and his witchy nemesis Mother Malkin respectively, as well as Narnia's Ben Barnes, Game of Thrones's Kit Harington and the ever-wonderful Olivia Williams. Here's the synopsis:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges), the last of the Falcon Knights, had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) many years ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes), to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man's only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Bodrov, the Russian director whose films Prisoner of the Mountains and Mongol: The Rise to Power of Genghis Khan were both Academy Award nominees for best foreign film, is an intriguing choice to take charge of the camera. Furthermore, the movie itself is based on a much-loved children's fantasy series, Joseph Delaney's The Spook's Apprentice (known as The Wardstone Chronicles outside the UK). Unfortunately, that's where much of the positive stuff ends.

I won't pretend to have read the novels, of which there are an impressive 12, but acolytes have been taking to web forums and the IMDb's message boards to berate the film's title change – as well as the decision to age up the main characters and ignore the very Lancastrian setting of the books – almost since the film first got the green light two years ago. Bridges, who appears to be adopting a sort of mid-Atlantic twang in the trailer, is "playing a skinny, malnourished bloke who lives a few days' walk from Burnley, FFS", according to one angry commenter on the Bleedingcool.com forum.

Over on IMDb, another fan writes: "I was so excited when I heard that the Spooks books might be made into a movie. Imagine my horror when they cast 20-year-olds to play 13-year-olds? Then they quite happily state that the movie will be nothing like the books. So what was the point in associating this movie with the book series when they have completely rewritten it? Bleh … Thank you Hollywood for ruining YET ANOTHER movie."

In the two years since that thread was posted, studio Warner Bros has replaced 27-year-old Sam Claflin with 31-year-old Barnes as (14-year-old) sorcerer's apprentice Tom Ward, which can only add to the "ageing up" distress. What's strange here is that Warner Bros is the same studio that gave us the Harry Potter films, which were notable for their refusal to change many details from JK Rowling's books – and were rewarded with the highest box-office gross of any film series in history. Game of Thrones may be deviating rather dramatically from George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels (with the full permission of the author, of course), but the elements of the source material – in particular the old world accents – remain intact.

The Hobbit trilogy, likewise, has been stretched into radical new forms as Jackson vies to ape the success of the rather more epic Lord of the Rings – but no one has yet attempted to saddle Gandalf with a Californian brogue. So why has The Spook's Apprentice been dealt such a poor hand? One can only assume it is because Delaney's books are less well known than their more celebrated counterparts.

Fantasy fans, are you happy enough simply to see a bit more swords and sorcery in cinemas? Or should Seventh Son have held true to its source material? For those who have yet to make up their minds, Bodrov's movie hits UK cinemas in October, but doesn't arrive in the US until January. So far, there's no official Australian release date. — Judy Blume (@judyblume) July 14, 2013

*Not everyone took to social media.*

Beyoncé held a moment of silence for Trayvon Martin during a concert at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

Afterward, she sang "I Will Always Love You."

The singer also shared the following image on her Tumblr page:

One of the most vocal on the issue was actor Michael B. Jordan who nearly cancelled a press event for new film "Fruitvale Station."

The Weinstein Company film offers a similar parallel to the Trayvon Martin case. The film follows 22-year-old Oscar Grant who was gunned down by a cop in 2008.

Before answering questions, the actor addressed the press about the case.

Via Deadline:

"My heart hurts so bad right now. I wasn’t going to come after I found out about George Zimmerman getting acquitted. It broke me up. That’s why I think this film means so much, because it keeps happening again and again. [We must] learn how to treat each other better and stop judging one another just because we’re different. It’s not just a black and white thing, it’s a people thing. It’s the only way that things are going to take the necessary steps to move in the right direction so things can get better because I don’t think it’s ever gonna stop, but something’s gotta f*****g change.”

Run; My £9.50 Holiday; Broken by Battle – TV review

$

Run, starring Olivia Colman, is extremely watchable – in a self-punishing kind of way

After the recent flurry of high-concept drama series that have included The Returned, The Fall and Broadchurch, we come to *Run* (Channel 4). There's a touch of concept to Run, in that each episode runs into one another, with a minor character in one becoming the central one in the next, but at its core it belongs much more in the familiar feel-bad tradition. The sort of thing that usually gets described as "gritty".

From the opening shots of single mum Carol (Olivia Colman) buying some cheap lagers before going to the south London council flat where her teenaged sons are goofing around smoking dope, to the final one of her sobbing as the boys get nicked, Run was set with cast-iron determinism. No twists, no surprises. Unless you count Colman spitting the word "cunt" with venom five minutes in; call me sheltered but I had never imagined Colman being able to say the C-word as if it was part of her everyday vocab. But when she said it a second time it came with the same inevitability as the mindless murder, domestic violence and the boys who were too stupid to wash the bloodstains off their own trackies.

And yet it was extremely watchable in a self-punishing kind of way. Partly because the predictable has its own tragic fascination, but mainly because Colman was entirely convincing as Carol. Sometimes gobby, sometimes tough as she tried to keep her life on track and her family together, but with the brittle vulnerability that comes with the knowledge of defeat always only ever a heartbeat from the surface. Initially best known for her comedy roles, Colman is steadily proving she has all-round star quality. She has certainly set a high bar for Katie Leung, who takes centre stage in the second episode as Ying, an illegal Chinese immigrant fencing stolen mobile phones to pay off her debts.

*My £9.50 Holiday* (BBC1) suggested it might be a gritty programme about the new vacation realities of austerity Britain, with families downsizing from their two weeks in the Med to a weekend in a caravan park courtesy of a bargain offer in the tabloids; The Guardian on Monday was offering a 17-day break to Madagascar for £5,495, which probably isn't quite the same thing. There were a few nods to everyone being a bit broke, but this documentary belonged firmly in the gently whimsical category. And was all the better for it.

It was a film in which almost nothing happened, other than a few families and friends turning up in Skegness for the weekend. A couple upgraded their caravan from bronze to silver, and everyone drank a bit too much, ate some junk food and tried to enjoy themselves when it was raining. Even Sam and Claire, who spent their first day moaning about the lack of net curtains. So it was pretty much like anyone's holiday anywhere, only a great deal cheaper.

The real stars of this show, though, weren't the people going on holiday, but the ones working for Park Resorts. The Skegness manager, Paul Chapman, is a TV legend in the making with his cheery perma-smile and repetition of the phrase "creating amazing memories" at least once every sentence. The head cleaner, who would rather be an air steward and who could reel off another company motto – "evaluate, learn and improve"– with a deadpan irony beyond his boss, wasn't far behind. There's a fly-on-the-wall series in these two for sure.

The most harrowing footage of the night was the message Lance Sergeant Dan Collins recorded on his phone before hanging himself on New Year's Day last year, which acted as the starting point for Sunday Times reporter Toby Harnden's moving *Broken by Battle – Panorama* (BBC1). After serving in Afghanistan, Collins was diagnosed with PTSD. Ten months later he cut himself with a knife and drove his car into a tree. He survived, only to take an overdose shortly afterwards. He was then admitted to an NHS psychiatric ward, where the prime treatment was sedation. On his release, he did finally manage to kill himself.

Harnden has since discovered that Collins is by no means a one-off. More serving soldiers and veterans killed themselves last year than were killed in combat. The Ministry of Defence issued a statement maintaining it took the mental health of soldiers extremely seriously, while at the same time appearing to deny any responsibility and stalling the victim's families with cripplingly slow and expensive battles. As one veteran pointed out, it looked more like a cheap insurance company.

TV review: Olivia Colman's performance is reason enough to watch Run

$

Channel 4 seems to have acquired a taste for tangled one-offs, that is self-contained dramas that are connected by loose threads to others in the same series. It isn't a new idea exactly. Paul Abbott did it in the excellent Clocking Off and Jimmy McGovern explored its possibilities in The Street. More recently, Channel 4's Dates drew on the combination of freshness and familiarity it can offer, the odd sense that you know more than a particular episode is telling you, because you've encountered the characters in other circumstances. *Run*, an account of south London underbelly life, is clearly going to do something similar, with an incidental character in this first episode providing the central figure for the next. To celebrate we have put together the ultimate guide to the trilogy, including everything we know about The World's End so far....

SHAUN OF THE DEAD - (STRAWBERRY CORNETTO)

· Inspired by an episode of 'Spaced', the television show created by peg/Wright, Shaun of the Dead was filmed in London and featured cameos from many of the Spaced cast

· The film stars a range of British comedic talent including Dylan Moran, Lucy Davis, Martin Freeman, Matt Lucas, Bill Nighy and of course Nick Frost as well as a cameo from Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin

· The film tells the story of Shaun a salesman who is down and out from losing his girlfriend and working a dead end job and has to also deal with the small matter of a Zombie outbreak

· The film is considered to be both a parody and an homage to the zombie genre

· The film was released in 2004 and was a critical and commercial success in both the UK and US making it into the top 10 in America despite having a very limited release

· Shaun of the Dead is now considered a cult classic and was transformed into a graphic novel published by Titan Books

· Cult director Quentin Tarantino was quoted as saying that Shaun of the Dead is one of the top 20 films made since 1992

· The film was played to George Romero (director of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead) who liked the film so much he offered Edgar and Simon a cameo in his next film

*'Shaun of the Dead' was where it all began*

HOT FUZZ - (ORIGINAL CORENTTO)

· Hot Fuzz was Wright/Pegg/Frost's take on the buddy cop action/comedy and was released in 2007

· The film centres around the character of Nichoals Angel (Pegg) who is transferred from the Met Police office in London to the small village of Sandford, a rural town in Gloucestershire to solve crimes in the area

· Hot Fuzz stars Jim Broadbent, Paddy Consdine, Bill Bailey, Olivia Colman and Timothy Dalton as well as appearances from Martin Freeman, Stephen Merchant and Bill Nighy

· Hot Fuzz is heavily influenced by the action genre and over action 100 films were used for inspiration during development

· Like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz features cameos from several famous faces, including; Cate Blanchett, Peter Jackson and Garth Jennings

· To get in shape for the film Simon Pegg was required to stick to a very strict diet and worked with not one, but three personal trainers

· Like its predecessor Hot Fuzz was both a critical and commercial success and generated £7.1 million in its opening weekend

*Hot Fuzz*

THE WORLD'S END - (MINT CORNETTO)

· This Friday the 'Blood and Ice Cream' trilogy will come to an end as The World's End is released in cinemas in the UK

· 'The World's End' reunites Pegg and Frost (along with Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman) and new recruits Eddie Marsan and Rosamund Pike

· In 'The World's End', 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub - The World's End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind's. Reaching The World's End is the least of their worries.

· Having conquered the zombie and action movie genre's for the final film in the trilogy, Wright/Pegg have chosen to take on the science fiction genre

· Pegg and Wright originally started planning the film ten years ago, but developed the idea during their press tour for Hot Fuzz in 2007

· 'The World's End' features a very special cameo from a well-known face, but we'll let the fans find this out for themselves this Friday
