Alstede Honors Chester Science Fair Winners
Patch Mendham-Chester, NJ --
Special Agricultural Achievement Awards sponsored by Alstede Farms and the Alstede Family were handed out at the Chester Science Fair, held at the Black River Middle School on March 2. Capturing the awards were Dylan Baker for his project entitled Fertilizer Mania; Olive Hyde for the Best Method for Eradicating Stink Bugs; and the team of Emma Gugliemini and Gabrielle Hamilton for their Plant Palooza. Alstede Farms Farm Steward, Sam Walmer presented the winners with a certificate, ribbon and an Ertl 1/16th scale replica of a vintage John Deere Tractor.
The Chester Science Fair is open to any K-8 student living in the Chesters and more than 500 children participated. The Special Awards are given out separately from the blue ribbons and medals that the regular Science Fair judges award and are sponsored and judged separately by Alstede Farms.
Students competing for the Alstede Farms Agricultural Achievement Award (4-A) were required to prepare projects judged utilizing the following criteria:
· Demonstration of alternative methods for growing food and fiber
· Demonstration of manipulation of plant growing conditions to improve productivity
· Demonstration of responsible care of natural resources in the production of food and fiber
· Demonstration of the impact of insects and disease on the production of food and fiber.
Projects were evaluated on their use of the scientific method and their originality.
Dylan’s project Fertilizer Mania tested mixing different recycling, household materials in soil and the impact on the ability for plants to grow. Olivia Hyde project examined the various methods for eliminating stink bugs, a pest that bothers not only farmers but all residents. And Emma Gugliemini and Gabrielle Hamilton gave a great presentation on growing plants through different color filters and the affect these filters had on the growth rate of the plants.
“It was difficult to decide whose project was the best,” Walmer said. “All of the presentations were extremely well done. The entrants should be proud of all of their hard work.” Reported by Patch 3 hours ago.

Thor Goes Racing For Oscar-Winning Director
From wielding Mjölnir to grabbing the checkered flag: Chris Hemsworth is set for his fastest role yet. The Australian actor plays famed English Formula 1 driver James Hunt in "Rush," Ron Howard's new racing drama set for release later this year.
MSN UK has released the first "Rush" trailer, which highlights the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda ("Inglourious Basterds" co-star Daniel Bruhl), which almost led to Lauda's death.
Peter Morgan, who wrote the script for Howard's adaptation of "Frost/Nixon," handled screenplay duties for "Rush." From the film's IMDb synopsis:
Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s. Based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt (Hemsworth), and his methodical, brilliant opponent Niki Lauda, (Bruhl). The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error: if you make a mistake, you die.
"Rush" is set for release on Sept. 20. The film also co-stars Olivia Wilde, as films released in 2013 are wont to do. Watch the international trailer above. Reported by Huffington Post 5 hours ago.

Phronesis – review
Queen Elizabeth Hall, London
Long before BBC viewers started lapping up Scandinavian crime drama, the UK's more discerning music fans have been falling for Scandinavian jazz. Norway, Sweden and Denmark have produced some of the world's most compelling improvised music in recent decades, jazz that jettisons any American blues component and creates its own expressionistic, cliche-free vocabulary.
Danish bassist Jasper Høiby – tall, blond, ponytailed – has spent 13 years in London, serving as an intermediary between the Nordic and UK jazz scenes. Phronesis is a pan-European outfit that unites Høiby with Swedish drummer Anton Eger and British pianist Ivo Neame, and together they invert the usual functions of the piano/bass/drums trio. Høiby's double bass is (literally) centre-stage, carrying the melodies and the solos. The piano becomes a rhythm instrument, jabbering out Morse-code rhythms, playing rippling chord clusters, but staying oddly static. The drums are almost textural: even when Anton Eger gets funky, he does so with brushes and beaters, never overwhelming the bass. It's an insular, self-contained sound, but a devastatingly effective one.
The second half of tonight's show expands the core trio with several London friends. Vocalist Olivia Chaney sings her own material in an appealingly folksy English accent, leads a spacious re-reading of Sidsel Endersen's Blessed Instant, and plays the Norma Winstone role in a piece that recalls the pastoral jazz of Neil Ardley or Michael Garrick. Vibist Jim Hart adds some much needed counterpoint, while composer Dave Maric triggers bell-like arpeggios on a synth module, providing the basis for some fiendishly complex compositions.
It's a voyage into the unknown for the six of them, and there's a reassuring familiarity when Phronesis return as a trio for the encore to do their insular, hypnotic thing. Despite making no effort to reach out beyond the cultish milieu of jazz fans, they're proving a surprisingly popular live draw.

Women's Soccer Players Continue Family Tradition in Montgomery County
Patch Rockville, MD --
Two-time collegiate All-American Stephanie Ochs “literally had nothing to do” living in a New York apartment when she was playing soccer in 2012. Now that the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team standout from San Diego has found a family in Germantown, there's always someone around.
Professional athletes are bunking with host families in Maryland and the District. It's not a study abroad exchange program. It's the National Women's Soccer League – the third shot at a professional women's soccer league, which is set to kickoff on April 13.
The living arrangement has become tradition for the country’s best women soccer players, and it helps build a fan base for the sport that needs support to become financially sustainable. It's also born of necessity for a profession where salaries are a tiny fraction of those for male professional athletes.
"Good enough for Abby (Wambach), it's good enough for everyone," Washington Spirit General Manager Chris Hummer said. "It's somewhat in the culture of professional women's soccer."
Wambach, the national women's soccer superstar, who is four goals away from breaking Mia Hamm's scoring record, lived with a host family while playing with the Washington Freedom, according to Hummer.
About 50 families offered to host Washington Spirit players during the 2013 season. Hummer said all the Washington Spirit players have been open to exploring the option to live with a host family, preferring fully private or semi-private homes with a separate bathroom and entrance.
“It has its ups and downs. But, in my case, I have my own space and my own living area, so I like living with a host family better,” said Ochs, who was selected first overall in the league’s inaugural supplemental draft. “I really like my family. They’re super fun.”
“We mesh perfectly, so it’s a really good situation.”
The draw for players is a “home atmosphere,” versus a hotel living situation with roommates, Hummer said. Players "prefer to live in a quieter, family environment, (but) socialize if they want to."
For Ochs, living with a host family offers a connection and an escape that living in an apartment did not.
“I was just sitting around all the time, but (now with) the host family, it’s like you kind of become part of the family and do stuff together. And it’s just a good way to, like, get your mind away from everything and have something else,” she said. “It’s kind of, like, a way to get away from soccer.”
Still, the culture of living with host families is in part a byproduct of salaries that provide players with a "living wage" on a month-to-month basis for less than half of the year.
"They're not paid enough to be able to afford to live in wealthy areas," said Hummer, who noted that many of the younger players prefer to live in neighborhoods closer to the Beltway like Adams Morgan and Georgetown. Hummer declined to release player salaries.
It's not just in Washington. Two other NWSL teams, the FC Kansas City and Sky Blue FC of New Jersey, also invite fans to apply as host families on team websites.
Ochs said she didn't know it was common for professional teams to arrange host families until the arrangement was offered to her, but since then she has recognized how it helps the sport grow.
"Both of the little girls I live with, they always bring all their friends over, and then, so all those friends want to come to the game," she said. The girls not-so-coincidentally play soccer, too. "It's also cool to kind of mingle with everyone (and) get involved with all their friends."
The practice of arranging host families is unheard of on the men's side.
"I don't think that (arranging host families) is anything that happens in the league," Ryan Tronovitch, the D.C. United media relations manager, said of Major League Soccer. "Most professional athletes are able to either find roommates or teammates to stay with if they are low on money."
Because the two previous women's soccer leagues folded, the NWSL has partnered with the U.S. Soccer Federation, the Federation of Mexican Football and the Canadian Soccer Association to stay within its economic structure.
The United States, Mexican and Canadian national teams will be footing the bill for national team players to cut cost overhead. But many Washington Spirit players who aren't on the national team will not have guaranteed contracts.
"We started off too big where our salaries were too high," Wambach said during a conference call for her new team, the Western New York Flash. She said women soccer players "deserve" to be compensated in similar ways, but ultimately have to compromise. "We have to take what we can get."
In 2007, superstar midfielder David Beckham, at age 31, signed a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy that made him the highest-paid MLS player with $6.5 million each year.
Washington Spirit players will make less than $500,000 combined, including national team players, according to Hummer's estimates. It means that each player will be paid less than $28,000 on average.
Most players will have a flexible second job coaching youth teams or clinics, he said. "The average pay for a female player doesn't compare" to men's professional sports.
“Dare to Dream,” the HBO film about U.S. women’s soccer -- that features player commentary from Wambach, Hamm, Julie Foudy, Carla Overbeck, Michelle Akers, Brandi Chastain, Kristine Lilly and Briana Scurry -- chronicles the history of women soccer players' financial woes.
“On the shoestring budget U.S. soccer relegated to its new operation (in 1991, the) team played for no money, the players got by on third-class travel, cheap motels, bad food and $10 a day meal money,” says film narrator Liev Schreiber.
The film shows players interacting with young fans, signing autographs and promoting the sport to play in front of a sold-out crowd of 90,000 fans at the Rose Bowl in California, winning the 1999 FIFA World Cup.
Taking a page out of the national team playbook, the Washington Spirit will not be far from the people who watch them play.
"I know a lot of people in Maryland. I feel like it's going to be a really good experience for me," said Spirit striker Tiffany McCarty, the No. 2 overall pick in the league's college draft.
Ochs, goalkeeper Chantel Jones and midfielders Tori Huster and Olivia Wagner stood behind signing autographs for a group of young fans -- local soccer players -- at Ludwig Field after a preseason match with the University of Maryland Terrapins.
"Sometimes it takes a little bit of sacrifice in order to get something good," Wambach said of the league. "This is about making sure that the next generation has an opportunity to play." Reported by Patch 2 hours ago.

Grease 2
Michelle Pfeiffer takes over from Olivia Newton John as the leader of Rydell High's Pink Ladies in the sequel to the 1978 smash musical. As gum-snapping teen queen Stephanie, she gets first dibs on British new boy Maxwell Caulfield, a black-clad biker with a hint of the Travoltas. The original was a hard act to follow but this energetic sequel floats on a raft of ditties from the likes of Tab Hunter and Connie Stevens.

Bafta TV nominations: BBC London 2012 Olympics coverage gets hat-trick
ITV documentary The Other Side of Jimmy Savile is front runner in current affairs category
The BBC's coverage of the London Olympics has notched up a hat-trick of nominations at the Bafta TV awards - one fewer than the sitcom which spoofed the games, Twenty Twelve.
Danny Boyle's acclaimed Olympics opening ceremony and the BBC's coverage of "super Saturday"– when Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford all won gold for Great Britain – are both nominated in the sport and live event category.
The opening ceremony is also nominated for the Radio Times Audience award, voted for by members of the public.
Twenty Twelve is nominated for best comedy programme along with acting nods for three of its stars - Olivia Colman, Jessica Hynes and Hugh Bonneville.
Last summer's sporting spectacle also provided Channel 4 with a nomination for its Paralympics coverage in the sport and live event category.
ITV documentary The Other Side of Jimmy Savile is the front runner in the current affairs category.
The show, presented by former detective Mark Williams-Thomas, sparked a major police investigation and plunged the BBC into a crisis that lead to the departure of director general George Entwistle after just 54 days in the job.
There were four nominations each for BBC1 dramas Accused and Last Tango in Halifax, with another four for BBC2's film about Alfred Hitchcock, The Girl, with nominations for its stars Sienna Miller and Toby Jones.
Peter Capaldi was nominated twice, for his roles in The Thick of It and another BBC2 show, The Hour. Olivia Colman also had two nominations, for Twenty Twelve and Accused.
Sheridan Smith received her first Bafta nomination from her role as Mrs Biggs, in the ITV drama of the same name.
Rebecca Hall is nominated for her role in BBC2's Parade's End, which is also up for best mini-series, but there is no nomination for her co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch.
Last Tango in Halifax stars Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid are both nominated for leading actor awards.
Competing against Twenty Twelve for the best sitcom prize will be The Thick of It, Episodes, and Sky Atlantic's Hunderby.
There are a total of seven nominations for programmes on Sky, its most to date, with Steve Coogan nominated for best male performance in a comedy programme for the return of Alan Partridge in Sky Atlantic's Welcome to the Places of My Life.
Sky's fantasy epic Game of Thrones is in the running for best international show, along with The Bridge, Girls and espionage thriller Homeland.
BBC2 had the most nominations, with 26, followed by BBC1 (22), Channel 4's 16, ITV (10) and three each for BBC3 and BBC4. There were six for Sky Atlantic, two for E4 and nods for Sky 1, Al Jazeera and Watch.
The event, formally known as the Arqiva British Academy Television awards, take place on Sunday 12 May at London's Royal Festival Hall and will be hosted by Graham Norton.

First trailer out for Formula 1 film Rush
Ron Howard's action-biopic tells of rivalry and debauchery between Hunt and Lauda
The first trailer for Oscar-winning director Ron Howard's tale of rivalry and debauchery on the 1970s Formula One racing circuit, Rush, has hit the internet.
The action-biopic stars Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl as racing rivals and real-life friends James Hunt and Niki Lauda, following the pair as they battle it out for the 1976 championship. Olivia Wilde stars as Hunt's long-suffering wife Suzy Miller, while Alexandra Maria Lara plays Lauda's first wife Marlene Knaus. With a screenplay by the Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Queen, Peter Morgan, Rush centres on the events surrounding Lauda's horrific crash during that year's German Grand Prix on the world famous Nürburgring circuit and his remarkable comeback just two races later despite appalling burns and the loss of both his eyelids in the resulting fire.
Hunt and Lauda once shared a one-bedroom flat in London but could not have been more different personalities. The wild-living Englishman, who reputedly slept with more than 500 women during his lifetime, routinely took drugs and had sex just minutes before taking to the racetrack. The meticulous Austrian, meanwhile, was known for his intense behind-the-scenes work testing and refining cars to perfection.
"Lauda and Hunt were rock stars of the race track: two absolute pros at the top of their game, in a time when sex was safe, driving was dangerous and all bets were off," said Howard, whose films include Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind and Cocoon. "They were also complicated, fascinating men and born rivals. Rush will be as much about that personal rivalry as it will be about the thrill of the race."
Australian actor Hemsworth is best known for his roles in comic book movies Thor and The Avengers, in which he played the Norse deity. Spanish-born Austrian actor Brühl is known to audiences for his turn as a Nazi war hero in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, as well as for his award-winning turn in the post-iron curtain drama Good Bye, Lenin!
Rush is due to hit cinemas in the UK on 13 September, while US audiences will get to see it one week later. Reported by guardian.co.uk 8 hours ago.

Bafta's TV nominations pay their respects to age
Nominations for the OAP drama Last Tango in Halifax and an adaptation of Shakespeare demonstrate the enduring appeal of substance over style
TV is frequently accused of being obsessed with youth, but this year's nominations for the industry's most-desired prizes are notably a triumph for two great septuagenarian actors and a famous 449-year-old dramatist.
Sir Derek Jacobi, 74, and Anne Reid, 77, feature in the leading performer shortlists of the 2013 Bafta awards for their portrayals, in BBC1's Last Tango in Halifax, of a Yorkshire widower and widow who appal their children by starting an autumnal love affair.
The judges' decisions are not only welcome recognition of the enduring excellence of two high-power performers but also justify a commission that defied several conventional televisual wisdoms, being not only concerned with the lives of the elderly but also specifically northern in both setting and characters.
The show is also noticed in the best drama serial category. Writer Sally Wainwright may be relieved to have told her story in six parts rather than one, as the screenwriters in the single drama category have to go up against William Shakespeare, who is nominated for Richard II, part of the BBC's The Hollow Crown sequence of his history plays.
Much like Last Tango in Halifax, the Bafta recognition of The Hollow Crown – which also gets acting nominations for Ben Whishaw's Richard II and Simon Russell Beale's Sir John Falstaff – cheeringly rehabilitates an unfashionable genre of TV. After the largely disastrous BBC TV Shakespeare in the 1970s, it was widely believed that the Bard was too hard to do on the small screen. But producers Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris – and their directors, including Richard Eyre – found a way of filleting and filming the history plays that made sense to modern audiences.
Away from the unexpectedly high profile for older performers and Elizabethan dramatists, these lists provide further confirmation of some soaring careers. The writer-producer Jimmy McGovern, who previously pretty much owned the Baftas with The Street, repeats the domination with its successor The Accused, which features a different criminal defendant in each episode. And actors Sheridan Smith and Olivia Colman, who have recently scored highly in theatre and movie awards, add broadcasting to their honours, with Smith singled out for impersonating Ronnie Biggs's wife in Mrs Biggs and Colman chosen for drama in The Accused and comedy in the Olympic sit-com Twenty Twelve.
There is also a unique case of a TV celebrity getting an unwanted Bafta nomination, although he isn't around to protest: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile is surely a shoo-in in the documentary category. Reported by guardian.co.uk 5 hours ago.
