'Biggest Loser' Star Olivia Ward Opens Up About Infertility Struggle And Medical Condition That Affected Her Weight Loss Biggest Loser alum *Olivia Ward* has been an inspiration to many after not only walking away with the top prize from the weight loss show over two years ago, but more importantly, has now kept in amazing shape since then and transformed her life completely.

*OK!'S 12 WEEK COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER*

But in an honest and encouraging chat with OKMagazine.com, the 37-year-old SoulCycle fitness trainer and co-founder of MyFitspiration.com tells us how having Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) played a role in her weight gain, infertility struggle and the hope she now has in becoming a mom one way or the other.

Her sister *Hannah Curlee*, and runner up on the show, adds that the path to losing weight is not a one size fits all method and what works for one person may not work for another depending on your genetic makeup or medical issues.

*#MOTIVATION MONDAY: HOW BIGGEST LOSER WINNER OLIVIA WARD AND RUNNER UP HANNAH CURLEE ARE KEEPING OFF THE WEIGHT*

*PCOS* is one of the most common hormonal conditions and it can make it difficult for sufferers to lose the weight, but once they do, it can drastically improve the symptoms.

Celebrities affected by PCOS, including *Victoria Beckham* and *Jillian Michaels* have shown that you can overcome the condition and have children naturally or through adoption.

*HEALTHY EATS! HOW EATING PALEO LIKE OUR ANCESTORS CAN HELP SHED THE POUNDS*

*OK!: How has being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome affected your life and what role did it play in your weight gain?*

Olivia Ward: The thing about PCOS is yes it very, very much affects weight loss and weight gain. And that was the first thing that the doctor said. When I was formally diagnosed after I had all the blood work, and the ultra sound and they knew for sure I had it, the first thing out of the doctor’s mouth was that this is going to be really, really hard, nearly impossible for you to lose weight.

*OK! NEWS: 'BIGGEST LOSER' WINNER DANNI ALLEN ON THE GENEROUS WAY SHE'LL SPEND $250,000 PRIZE*

Does it make it more difficult? Absolutely, because my body and your body and [sister] Hannah’s body… our metabolism doesn’t function like a normal, average woman that doesn’t have these issues. So there are steps that we have to take that are a little different. We have to stick to low glycemic index carbohydrates, we have to really make sure we pump our diet full of lean protein and veggies, that's where we have to get the bulk out of our nutrition.

*CELEB DIET TIPS! GWYNETH PALTROW'S TRAINER TRACY ANDERSON ON GETTING THE BODY YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED*

*OK!: But there is hope and you can lose the weight despite the condition?*

OW: I will say though, the good thing about PCOS is even though it throws everything out of wack, and you do continue to gain weight in a pretty regimented way, with the upswing of the weight. It is the same way with the down swing. Once our bodies figured out what was going on, it was pretty regimented in the way it started coming off in pretty equal increments, which I always think is very, very encouraging.

So as long as you’re really sticking to the low glycemic index, almost like a diabetic diet, and really upping your exercise obviously. Yes we do have to work a little bit harder, but it’s definitely not impossible.

*CELEB DIET TIPS! 'BIGGEST LOSER' STARS DOLVETT QUINCE AND ALISON SWEENEY ON TRACKING GOALS FOR WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS*

*OK!: How has it affected you Hannah?*

Hannah Curlee:  It made me really depressed because I thought well here is another card stacked on this mountain why I can’t lose the weight. And a lot of other things come with PCOS, a lot of other symptoms that are awful. More belly fat, more hips and thigh fat, but when I learned that I had control that was it.

Also the worst thing is, is that they told us we were probably going to be infertile, and we weren’t going to be able to have children because of our weight and that was the scariest part of the whole thing.

*MELISSA JOAN HART REVEALS HOW SHE DROPPED 20LBS*

When we went on the show, and Jillian Michaels found out that we had it she was like, oh no, this is awful. And I was like, Jillian is already dooming us, we’re going home in a week, this is horrible. But Olivia and I took a step back and just said, ok, so this sucks, and we’re going to have to work harder than everyone else, but we have the time to do it, we have a real chance to show people that we can beat this, and we just made a commitment to each other. We just said, we have to do this for our future, for our future kids, for everything and we just went for it.

*OK!'s 12 WEEK COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER: STAR BODIES! HOW TO GET BLAKE LIVELY'S TONED LEGS*

And it was slow at first, we didn’t lose the huge numbers. When it first started it was enough to keep us there. And then our bodies literally woke up, it just woke up and started working. And so the key is, even if you have a week where you lose half a pound, or if you lose nothing, or if you gain 2lbs, that’s just your specific body, trying to regulate itself, and you have to know that there is going to be an 8lb month down the road. You just cannot stop. The problem with us is that we always stopped because we got so frustrated. Once we really kept going it worked.

*STAR BODIES! BEST EXERCISES TO GET TONED ARMS LIKE MICHELLE OBAMA*

The positivity part too and the mind part of this whole thing, I never realized you lose weight in your mind first, especially women, because our stress hormones go up and down. And that works with the PCOS. So every time I was at a Weight Watcher meeting, I would punch a hole in the wall, which I’ve done before unfortunately, because I had lost a quarter of a pound and had a total meltdown in front of all these other women. I was never giving myself the proper chance. So you just cannot stop and you have to keep going. Once we really kept going, our bodies finally caught up and let me tell you we went all the way. It was fantastic.

*OK! NEWS: DOLVETT QUINCE GIVES US TIPS ON HOW NOT TO OVERINDULGE*

OW: And the great thing about PCOS is that once you do start losing the weight, and your body really starts to see the change, so many of your symptoms begin to diminish. Like I’m going to be honest, I started to get random hairs on my face, and I was like where is all this coming from, excess belly fat, irregular menstrual cycle and those things have all gone away since I lost the weight and maintained it and that to me is what is so great because it wasn't fun dealing with all those weird symptoms.

*GYM JAMS! GET YOUR SWEAT ON WITH THIS SEXY GIRL GROUPS WORKOUT PLAYLIST*

I think there really is a ray of hope for women and that the key to overcoming PCOS really does start with health, wellness and weight loss and if you can just grab onto that and literally push yourself to go the extra mile, those symptoms will subside and a lot of it will go away forever.

Hannah and I are just really real in who we are and we believe in this so strongly because that’s the problem with weight loss in this country, there is no hope for people and Hannah and I really want to communicate that to everyone we come into contact with. We didn’t do anything special, we are not special people, we are just average every day women. We were just able to get our hands on the right knowledge, the right tools. But it is out there for every single person. And if you really want this you can have it. It’s just there for the taking.

*STAR STYLE: WHAT THE CELEBS WEAR TO WORK OUT*

OW: Jillian used to tell us this all the time, and this was the biggest comfort to me ever, and this is going to sound so funny but, Hannah and I would always be so frustrated, there are other girls who would get up on the scale and lose like 11lb and Hannah and I would work way harder than everyone else and I would lose like 3lbs and Hannah would lose like 4lbs. And granted, that sounds amazing in real life, but on The Biggest Loser, you’re like, 3lbs is going to send me home.

*PHOTOS: BIGGEST CELEBRITY WEIGHT LOSS STORIES IN PICTURES*

But Jillian was always like, take a look at the weight loss over the month, because every woman fluctuates because we’re women, and with PCOS especially our system is so unstable, but she was like, if you look at the weight loss of the women over the month, you will all be within two pounds of one another. So look at the overview of the month, two month or even three month span. It’s so much more encouraging that way.

*#MOTIVATIONMONDAY! TRY OUT FUN WORKOUT ROUTINES LIKE BELLYDANCING*

*OK!: Olivia, you’ve spoken about your infertility struggle, are you and your husband still trying to start a family?*

Olivia: I definitely still want a family very much. I tried to really, for the first year, year and a half, really give my body a break, because I’d been through such a massive change and for me I just wanted to make sure 100% that I could keep this off and really understand my body and give my body a chance to catch up with what I did to it. So I’m just now really starting to explore the timing of when I’m going to have kids and it’s something my husband and I are actively working on. We’re also looking into adoption actively as well. So hopefully, within the next year or two, we will hopefully have a biological baby and an adopted baby.

*PHOTOS: BIGGEST CELEBRITY WEIGHT LOSS STORIES IN PICTURES*

I just really wanted to make sure that I didn’t go through this massive transformation, so fast, before I was really able to understand it and able to learn how to maintain it, and then get pregnant and then gain the weight back and then try to get the pregnancy weight off with a baby. Even though I know my clock is ticking extremely loud, I’m not a spring chicken any more, but I do feel like now, I’m in such a healthier state mentally and physically, to be the best mom that I can be.

Bafta nominations: three for Olympics – but four for Twenty Twelve

Three other programmes nominated four times: Accused and Last Tango in Halifax, and BBC2 Alfred Hitchcock film, The Girl

It was only to be expected that the BBC's acclaimed coverage of the London Olympics would be recognised at the Bafta television awards.

But with three nominations, including Danny Boyle's spectacular opening ceremony, the Olympics has still ended up with one fewer than the BBC2 sitcom that spoofed the preparations for the Games, Twenty Twelve.

The comedy about the fictional Olympic Deliverance Commission and their hapless efforts to stage the 2012 Games is in the running for best sitcom in the nominations announced on Tuesday, with three of its stars, Olivia Colman, Jessica Hynes and Hugh Bonneville also nominated.

Three other programmes have been nominated four times: the two BBC1 drama series Accused and Last Tango in Halifax, and BBC2's film about Alfred Hitchcock, The Girl.

Written and directed by John Morton, Twenty Twelve was described by one critic as a "portrait of a nation at ease with its unrivalled inability to be any good at anything ever". It also had an uncanny ability to predict real-life events, such as the breakdown of the Olympics countdown clock.

The BBC's coverage of the Games progressed rather more serenely than the fictional counterpart, catapulting one of its presenters, Clare Balding, into the television big league.

Balding also anchored Channel 4's coverage of the London Paralympics. Nominated in the sport and live event category, it will do battle with Boyle's Olympics opening ceremony and the BBC's coverage of "super Saturday" when Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford all won gold for Great Britain.

Its acclaimed Olympics coverage promised it would be a year to remember for the BBC, only for the corporation to be plunged into crisis by the revelations about Jimmy Savile. ITV's Exposure documentary, The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, which broke the Savile story, is frontrunner for the current affairs prize.

There were no nominations for ITV's biggest drama hit for years, Downton Abbey, and its BBC1 Sunday-night rival, Call the Midwife, is nominated only in the Radio Times audience award, which is voted for by the public.

Alison Graham, TV editor of the Radio Times, said they were significant omissions, along with BBC2's hit crime drama, Line of Duty, starring Lennie James.

"Line of Duty had a huge audience for BBC2 and was massively talked about yet doesn't get a mention," she said. "I hesitate to use the word snobbery but these awards are voted for by industry insiders and there's a certain amount of snobbery surrounding the massive shows. It may be that they are just too big, but it runs a risk of slightly alienating the audience."

Colman, nominated for Twenty Twelve and the BBC1 drama Accused, was one of two actors to be nominated twice; Peter Capaldi is recognised for his roles in the BBC2 drama The Hour and Armando Iannucci's The Thick of It.

The acclaimed political satire, which came to an end after 24 episodes last year, competes for best sitcom with Twenty Twelve, BBC2's Episodes and Sky Atlantic's black comedy Hunderby, written by its star Julia Davis. Episodes star Stephen Mangan dubbed it the "group of death".

Iannucci was also closely involved in the return of Alan Partridge, played by Steve Coogan, who is nominated for Alan Partridge: Welcome to the Places of My Life on Sky Atlantic.

Iannucci, now working on a big-screen adaptation of Partridge, said: "I'm really pleased with the The Thick of It nomination, because it was a nice nod to what's definitely the last one ever. And I'm thrilled with the Alan Partridge nomination, because it was a nice welcome back after we said Alan's previous show was definitely the last one ever."

Other nominees included the artist Grayson Perry, for his Channel 4 series In the Best Possible Taste; the Bradford-born magician Dynamo for Magician Impossible on the digital channel Watch, BBC2's cookery hit The Great British Bake Off and E4's "constructed reality" show, Made In Chelsea.

BBC2 had most nominations, with 26, followed by BBC1 (22), Channel 4 (16), ITV (10) and three each for BBC3 and BBC4.

The BBC2 controller, Janice Hadlow, said: "I'm delighted! It's a fantastic recognition of all the hard work the creative community has devoted to making great programmes for BBC2. I wish they could all win."

Sky, which has ploughed millions of pounds of extra investment into homegrown comedy and drama, was rewarded with a record seven nominations, including six for Sky Atlantic.

Boyd Hilton, TV editor of Heat magazine, said: "Something like Hunderby may not be watched by millions of people [it debuted with 110,000 viewers in August last year] but it was an excellent show and quite rightly nominated."

Sheridan Smith received her first Bafta nomination from her role as Mrs Biggs in the ITV drama of the same name. Rebecca Hall is nominated for her role in BBC2's Parade's End, which is also up for best mini-series, but there is no nomination for her co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch. Last Tango in Halifax stars Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid are both nominated for leading actor awards.

Sky's fantasy epic Game of Thrones is in the running for best international show, along with The Bridge, Girls and the espionage thriller Homeland.

The event, formally known as the Arqiva British Academy Television awards, takes place on Sunday, 12 May at London's Royal Festival Hall and will be hosted by Graham Norton. Reported by guardian.co.uk 1 minute ago.

And The Most Popular Baby Boy and Girl Names in Iowa Are... Patch Ankeny, IA --

Names, like clothes, go in and out of fashion.

As a parent, I struggled to find names for my children that were traditional yet not commonplace, and vetted them for potential for insulting rhymes.

I now have an Oliver and an Autumn.

At the time, Oliver was rare in my circles, and I figured my son would walk through life with a fairly unique name. But, now there's a half dozen other children named Oliver that I know.

According to the U.S. Social Security Administration's list of most popular baby names in Iowa, Oliver didn't crack the list, at least in recent years, until 2009 when it appeared at 83.

In the latest comes in as the 43rd most popular name here, and Autumn is the 46th most popular. Oliver didn't even make the list in recent years until 2009 when it appeared at 83.

Strangely, I haven't come across many other Autumns, although her name has consistantly been in the top 100 baby names over the years.

But, enough about me.

Carter, Mason, Owen, Noah and Jacob are the latest most popular boy names, at least as of 2011 which is the latest report from the U.S. Social Security Administration. Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava and Addison are the most popular girl names.

Below is the full list of 101 most popular baby names in Iowa as of 2011. And, the Des Moines Register has a nifty database where you can explore the most popular baby names for the past 100 years.

Laura Powell's top 10 heroes in disguise

$

From Odysseus and Lancelot to Aravis Tarkheena and Severus Snape, Laura Powell uncovers her favourite heroes in hiding

"Heroes have a tendency to hide from the world. They often have to conceal a secret power or identity; sometimes it's their true nature that's disguised, sometimes just their appearance. The two lead characters of Burn Mark and its sequel, Witch Fire, are teenage witches, living in a version of Britain where witches are a persecuted underclass and the Inquisition is an elite police force. As such, magic has to be concealed or else controlled by the authorities. But of course you don't have to possess Dark Forces to feel you've got something to hide, or that you're pretending to be something you're not. At one time or another, everyone feels like a fake…"

Laura Powell's latest book, Witch Fire, is the sequel to Burn Mark, a tale of ancient witchcraft in a modern world.

*1. Odysseus in The Odyssey by Homer*

Unlike most of the Greek heroes, Odysseus is more famous for his cunning and eloquence than his brawn. After a 10-year journey home from the Trojan War, he disguises himself as a wandering beggar to see what's befallen his household since he's been gone. Only his faithful dog Argus recognises him – and promptly dies of happiness!

*2. Lancelot in The Once and Future King by TH White*

White re-imagines the glamorous Sir Lancelot as ugly and self-loathing. Driven mad by his adulterous love for Guenever, Lancelot runs away from Camelot to become a "wild man". King Pelles dresses him as a Fool and keeps him in his stables, but the wild man's skills as a warrior ensure that he is eventually recognised and rescued by his friends. Tragic, comic, heart-racing and heart-breaking, White's masterpiece is still the finest Arthurian fantasy of them all.

*3. Viola in Twelfth Night by Shakespeare*

Shipwrecked and stranded in a country that's at war with her own, Viola pretends to be a boy to get a place in the all-male court of Duke Orsino. Her job is to woo the Countess Olivia on his behalf, when she is in love with the Duke herself. Witty, charming, resourceful … it's no surprise that Olivia falls in love with Viola's male alter-ego, Cesario. Wouldn't anyone?

*4. Sir Percy Blakeney in The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy*

Sir Percy is the Bruce Wayne of the French Revolution: a rich playboy with a double life spent rescuing people from the guillotine. He's a master of disguise, a dashing swordsman, schemer and escape artist. But to the world at large, he's just another posh nincompoop. Swashbuckle-tastic!

*5. Aravis Tarkheena in The Horse and His Boy by CS Lewis*

Aravis is a princess straight out of the Arabian Nights, who disguises herself in her brother's armour to escape an arranged marriage and have adventures with her talking horse, Hwin. She's wonderfully sharp-tongued and disagreeable to start with. But as well as being a raging snob, Aravis is courageous and loyal, an amazing story-teller and expert horsewoman. Some critics disapprove of Lewis because of what they perceive to be old fogeyish views, but I think the humanity of his writing always shines through. I can't imagine any child not being inspired by the Narnian Chronicles's heady mix of Platonic philosophy, Christian symbolism and pagan mythology.

*6. Alanna of Trebond in The Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce*

Yes, it's another girl-disguised-as-a-boy. Alanna is destined to go to a convent to learn to be a lady, but she longs to be a derring-do knight. Disguised as "Alan", she goes to the royal palace to follow her dream. Tamora Pierce was writing wonderfully strong, stubborn female leads long before "feisty" became a literary cliché for girls.

*7. Sophie Hatter in Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne-Jones*

Sophie is turned into an old crone by a witch's curse. The twist is, although she's a meek and mousy girl, she finds it much easier to be bossy and outspoken once she's an elderly woman. So she braves the castle of the fearsome Wizard Howl and bullies him into giving her a job as his cleaner. From there, she sets about trying to lift the curse, while looking for Howl's legendary stash of young girls' hearts. Wynne-Jones is a genius, and vain, cowardly Howl is my secret crush.

*8. Will Stanton in The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper*

Will Stanton is a very different kind of superhero – a scruffy schoolboy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is an immortal "Old One" and destined to wield the mystical powers of The Light in the ancient struggle with The Dark. A classic fantasy, in which the hero's thrill at possessing great power is offset by its burden of loneliness and secrecy.

*9. Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling*

We don't find out Snape's true loyalties until the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The ultimate triple-agent, he's a morally fascinating character who's as genuinely unpleasant as he is heroic.

*10. Luke in Lament by Maggie Stiefvater*

There are an awful lot of paranormal romances in which girls-next-door fall for a vampire/faery/werewolf cunningly disguised as a high-school heartthrob. But Stievater's in a class of her own. And so is Luke! A faerie-assassin masquerading as – yes – a high-school heartthrob, he's conflicted, dangerous, irresistible … and tragically trapped between two worlds. Potential mayoral candidate Olivia Chow opposes jets landing at Toronto island airport

Potential mayoral candidate Olivia Chow opposes jets landing at Toronto island airport Olivia Chow, the NDP MP and potential Toronto mayoral candidate, opposes jets landing at an expanded island airport — setting up a potential 2014 campaign fight with Mayor Rob Ford.

“I don’t support the proposed expansion of the island airport,” Chow told the Star in an email Thursday, one day after Porter Airlines announced controversial plans to start flying jets out of Billy Bishop Airport.

Robert Deluce, chief executive of popular Porter, which flies turboprop planes as far as South Carolina, has made big waves with a conditional order for jets while he lobbies the city, Ottawa and the Toronto Port Authority to extend the airport runway by 168 metres at each end.

“I don’t have a problem with it,” Ford told reporters Thursday when asked about amending the 1983 tripartite agreement to extend the runway and allow jets to land downtown.

Chow, however, noted that a speedy taxpayer-funded transit link between Pearson International Airport and Union Station is in the works and Pearson airport has lots of capacity.

“The effort of all three levels of government to revitalize Toronto’s waterfront is starting to pay huge dividends,” she wrote. “More people and businesses are moving into the area.

“The new parks and other public amenities are cherished, and the Toronto Islands continue to be one of the city’s most popular destinations. And opening up the airport to jets will have wide-ranging negative effects on residents along the waterfront from Scarborough to Etobicoke.”

For a city to succeed, neighbourhoods need to succeed so “Porter should respect the terms of its existing agreement,” Chow concluded.

She stood beside David Miller in 2003 when he rode opposition to an island airport bridge to the mayor’s chair. Chow married on the Toronto islands, and the city renamed the ferry terminal to honour her late husband, Jack Layton.

It is difficult to say whom the issue would benefit if it has a second life as a wedge in next year’s mayoral election.

Since 2003, Porter and flying from downtown have become very popular with many Torontonians. The idea of taking a streetcar to a Florida flight would appeal to many. However, concerns over development of Toronto’s much-abused waterfront linger.

TTC chair Karen Stintz, who is also considering a run against Ford, on Wednesday quickly went on record saying Porter is a great airline but it should respect the tripartite agreement and abandon expansion plans.

Stintz noted that changing the agreement — which requires agreements of all three parties — would open the airport to jets from Air Canada and other tenants, not just the new 107-seat Bombardier CS100s that Porter promises will be quiet.

Councillor Adam Vaughan, yet another potential mayoral challenger and the airport’s ward councillor, is furious at Porter for the hard-sell bid. He raised the spectre of corporate jets now landing at Pearson flocking to the downtown airport instead. Reported by Toronto Star 1 day ago.

Top 101 Most Popular Baby Boy and Girl Names Released Patch Iowa City, IA --

Strangely, I haven't come across many other Autumns, although her name has consistently been in the top 100 baby names over the years.

How Does 'Jerseylicious' Star Gayle Giacomo Keep Her Salon Staff in Line? Find Out Here! Drama whips through The Gatsby Salon on Jerseylicious much like a major storm, but the cast's personal issues pale in comparison to the horrific affects Hurricane Sandy had on their beloved home state last November. To help those in need, *Gayle Giacomo *and her co-star *Anthony Lombardi* banded their respective salon staffs together to host a fundraiser, which will be featured on this Sunday's (April 14) episode of the show. I chatted with Gayle about the do-gooder event and, of course, her infamous employees.

*OK! News: 'Jerseylicious' Stars Anthony and Olivia Dish On Their New Book 'The Glamour State'*

*OK!: What made you decide to put together this fundraiser for Hurricane Sandy victims?
Gayle Giacomo:* Anthony and I did it together and then we got in contact with this foundation from down the shore, they were recovery for all of the people who were in need for every day, so it wasn’t like going through the Red Cross. These people dealt with families and I really wanted to help out the families that were affected by it personally.

*OK!: How did the storm affect you?*

*GG:* Personally we were affected where my salon was closed for two weeks because we had no electric or heat or anything, but the second week we just opened up and brought heaters in and we were shampooing people’s heads if they wanted to be shampooed because a lot of people didn’t have water or blow dryers. We were doing it all free of charge and blow drying just so they would have clean hair. We brought in some generators we had and heaters and we worked however we could.

*
Watch: What Other Businesses Will Tabatha Coffey Take Over?*

*OK!: Were you surprised at how people rallied together after the storm to help each other out?*

*GG: *No, I think New Jersey and New York people are the type of people who are willing to help each other and I think with something so tragic, any human being wants to help another person get through this in any way they can. You know the affect it had on you and then when you see these other people who were just devastated by it, you want to reach out.

*OK!: Have you seen things picking up and getting back to normal?*

*GG:* In our immediate area everything’s back to normal but if I go down toLong Branch, Sea Bright and all of that, that was really affected. A lot of my friends who own businesses were very affected, other business owners even with hair salons. They had to pick up and move somewhere else and unfortunately for them to go back to the same area it’s just not going to work. So I mean I do see that they are moving along but they’re really affected badly. Their homes and their businesses. For one family that’s a lot to overcome. We raised $7,000 towards helping these people.

*Photos: Sweet Celeb Parent and Child Moments Caught on Camera*

*OK!: Jerseylicious is known for its drama, how happy were you that your staff could put aside their differences to work on this fundraiser?*

*GG:* I was really thrilled and I was hoping they could. I feel that in the years we’ve been together they have been maturing and I think at this time they realized it’s not just about them. We had to pull together and do something for our area to help. They did a great job.

*
OK!: Who do you feel has evolved the most over the years?*

*GG:* I would say* Olivia*. I think Olivia always tried to keep peace and they (Olivia and *Tracy*) are both strong people but I think Tracy’s a little stronger and she doesn’t hold back, if you know what I mean.

*Watch: Who's On Kim Kardashian's Witness List For Divorce Court? Hope It's Not Us!*

*OK!: When I interviewed Olivia about The Glamour State book launch party she seemed really thrilled that she stayed out of the drama that night.*

*GG:* Yeah, she’s doing really good. I think she’s grown a lot. I really do. I’m very proud of her.

*OK!: How do you manage to run a successful salon despite all of the drama?*

*GG:* I’ve been in business 34 years now I think it is, and especially being in New Jersey (people) express themselves verbally. Through all of the years I’ve been in my salon I just have a really good handle on it and...I guess I’m more like their mother. I think that’s why at the end of the night when I go home to my own son I’m like, “I don’t want to hear it!” I’m dealing with it all day long. But it is, you’re like a mother, Hairdressers are artistic. You have all different breeds. You just learn to be like their mother, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, sometimes I say, you know what, I think we should hand out some kind of Xanax or something and put it in their coffee. I think to work at The Gatsby you need to take meds.

Urban Archeologist: Casting Call for Icy Part

Urban Archeologist: Casting Call for Icy Part Patch Woodbury-Middlebury, CT --

It was a cold day in 1973 when a storm surprised the town of New Canaan, CT. It actually may not have been that cold, at first. However, by the next day the town was an impassable ice and snow covered mess and the property loss would total $15 million or more.  What has this got to do with Urban Archeology?

My itinerary a few weeks ago took me through Ridgefield to New Canaan. There were several estate sales on this path and though I often find the term “estate sale” to be loosely defined, if five are listed then one will hopefully be good.

One sale turned out to be worth the effort, although we got there too late to enjoy a wider selection, it was still fun to explore. This was a large home built possibly in the 1950s and every hallway contained more rooms than we expected, though it was not a mansion.

The only standout item was an old train set that I couldn’t see haggling down from the $500 price tag when all I wanted was the accompanying catalog from 1952 (darn). Feeling like we would have to move on to the next sale I took a last look on the dining room table. Among the glassware and crystal vases was another kind of crystal wrapped in a cellophane bag. The handwriting on the bag said “ice storm.” (See image) I had a hunch about this.

I had seen “The Ice Storm,” a well-acted, well-written, heavy drama from 1997 starring Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. Directed by Ang Lee, it is a period piece surrounding the lives of two Connecticut families, and was shot on location in New Canaan. The storm itself plays a pivotal role in the final scenes. The New Canaan railroad station is made to look as though it has been coated in a sheet of thick ice as a main character arrives from New York.

The owner of the home must have visited the set after the production wrapped and collected some of the faux icicles created by the special FX team. I have seen production companies take over towns (or parts of them) and it is common for residents to want a memento. A note with the icicles explains where they came from. Though they feel like rubber, they look as cold as they were designed.

The novel, written by Rick Moody, was set in the period when the original storm took place while he was growing up in Connecticut. Forty years later that storm becomes a chapter in my perpetual hunt for old odd and forgotten pieces of days past.

Speaking of Hollywood, what would you do if you wanted to read about Olivia De Havilland and the latest scanty panty scandal? You’d take a Quick look!

Greg Van Antwerp is a Brookfield resident and blogger, who can be found on the weekends in search of a good “dig” or a good story.  You can read more about his adventures by visiting his blog. Reported by Patch 6 seconds ago.
