Celebrate Shakespeare on Film: Top Five of All Time

LONDON — Cinema Siren is writing from London this week, and preparing to see James McAvoy in Macbeth at Trafalgar Transformed. A fan of his work for years, I jumped at the chance to see a new and exciting version of the play put together by the famous British stage director Jamie Lloyd with production design by Soutra Gilmour, who won the 2012 Evening Standard award for Best Design.
It got me thinking about the many cinematic versions of Shakespeare's work in film history. Shakespeare never goes out of style, as witnessed by the recent release directed by Ralph Fiennes, Coriolanus in 2012. Joss Whedon is about to release a home movie version of Much Ado About Nothing (no kidding, it was filmed at his house) on June 7, starring his usual suspects including Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Fran Kranz and Amy Acker.
If the director of The Avengers is doing it, it must be cool….I thought now, in honor of my Shakespearean pilgrimage to jolly ole England, I would offer a little list of suggested viewing for those of you who might want to see some of the best versions of his plays immortalized on celluloid.
*You can rent many of these movies from the Georgetown Neighborhood Library, 3260 R St. NW.*
Here are Cinema Siren's top five of all time:
*#5 The Taming of the Shrew* (1967) Directed by Franco Zeffirelli: This play can be seen as quite misogynistic, but depending on your perspective, can also be quite empowering for women. What makes this version so compelling is notoriously manipulative train wreck couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton play the leads. It has an earthy, very late '60s vibe, and includes Michael York, as well as famed Brit Shakespearean actor Cyril Cusack (whose daughter Sinead Cusack has also become a great actress on the Shakespearean stage, winning a Tony for Much Ado About Nothing in 1985…she is also married to actor Jeremy Irons). It may seem like everyone is having too much fun, but these actors, some of thedddd best in film, make it look easy.
*#4 King Lear *(1983) Directed for TV by Michael Elliott: Cinema Siren is extremely biased about the best King Lear, because I saw a version of this one, starring Laurence Olivier and Diana Rigg, onstage. It's maybe impossible to do better than a play featuring those two actors together, although adding John Hurt might do it. This recording has every dark, intense quality you could ask for, with all the actors going from subtlety to physical extravagance and back again, like a great symphony played by the best musicians in the world. Olivier won an Emmy for his performance. He was 75 at the time, making him one of the oldest to perform this extremely demanding role in Shakespeare's longest play. We are lucky to have it to refer to as a study of his great talent. Honorary mention to both the 1997 version with Ian Holm, which is extremely impressive, and the adaptation by great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa in Ran.
*#3 Julius Caesar *(1953) Directed by Joseph Mankiewicz: This is the famous version with Marlon Brando as Mark Antony and John Gielgud as Cassius, who had played Antony at the Old Vic Theatre in 1930. James Mason as Brutus, Greer Garson as Calpurnia and Deborah Kerr as Portia is enough to make any classic film fan drool with anticipation. The post-Streetcar announcement that Brando was going to tackle this Shakespearean role was met with skepticism, but he wound up with a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Gielgud was so impressed with Brando's work, he offered to direct him in a stage production of Hamlet, but it never came to pass. Big egos and big drama on set didn't keep this film from being mesmerizing to watch from start to finish.
*#2 Romeo and Juliet *(1968) also directed by auteur Franco Zeffirelli: To my mind, this is not only the best version of the play onscreen, but also represents the best of his cinematic work. Unlike previous versions, the actors hired to play the leads, Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey, who at 17 and 15 respectively, were close to the ages the characters would be. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. It was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture.
*#1 Richard III *(1955) Directed by Laurence Olivier: Well, I have to save the best for last. Imagine the best Shakespearean actors ever filmed all together in one movie. This is it. Arguably the darkest of his plays, (I'd say King Lear is the saddest, Macbeth is the angriest and Richard III is the darkest…start your fussing here.) We have direction by a master thespian who is also playing the lead. John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson, finishing out the trifecta of brilliance, also star. One of the two best Shakespearean actresses ever, Claire Bloom, plays Lady Anne. Brilliant and excruciating from start to finish. This is why movies were invented, to capture a moment in acting history. See it now.
Since most of you won't be sitting in the tiny theatre dedicated to this new version of Macbeth in London with me, you can play along at home in the "I <3 Shakespeare" game and see these classic versions with these great actors. I'll report back after seeing Macbeth, and you write your thoughts and favorites below as well. I'm off…for Cinema Siren today "the play's the thing."

You Said it, Middletown: Are You Plowed Out Yet?

Editor's Note: These comments were compiled from Facebook through 10:31 p.m. Sunday, upon which Middletown Patch promptly collapsed from blizzard-induced exhaustion and entered REM sleep!
Middletown Patch posted a request on its Facebook page Sunday evening. Residents responded in droves with how they were faring in the aftermath of the blizzard that dumped 36 inches of snow on our fair city.
"Help us compile a true representation of adequately plowed streets by adding your street and when it was cleared. Thank you!"
A staggering number of people gave us invaluable information for their neighbors.
· Scotty: Sears St still not touched. Keeping me out of work I don't mind

· Krista: Deerfield ave not plowed and emergency management could not get to this RN who had to walk to Ridge Rd to get a ride to hospital. So disappointed.
· Dorothy: Knollridge not plowed
· Jane: Bartholomew rd plowed extremely well this afternoon- plow driver even avoided pushing snow into end of driveway. Ironically- our plow man lives on our road in higganum and his roads were clear since yesterday? He couldn't get to us because at the Middletown line our roads weren't plowed.
· Brenda: Aston lane was plowed one lane at 730 this morning. Nothing since
· Queshia: rose cir not plowed
· Josselyn: Jacobs Terrace not plowed :(
· Tim: Bailey Rd not plowed
· Alicia: The Farms off of East St...not one road plowed!
· Bryan: Goodman dr one lane

· Michelle: Monarch Lane and Willow Bee Lane not plowed.
· Trish: Ledgebrook lane NOT PLOWED

· Elise: Sorry you're getting only not-plowed comments but... Beverly Heights & Egan Rd still pure snowy tundra. I hiked up and saw a plow trying to work on Boston Rd and it was just spinning its wheels for several minutes. I do believe they're exerting a huge effort!
· Krista: The plow was one street over about 5 pm and then left. Now no sight of them guess were not going to hit that midnight deadline!!!
· Marie: Virginia Dr. NOT plowed- except for lane created by husband, son and neighbors !!
· Lisa: It's 10:00pm still no sight or sound of any plows. I'm a corner lot neither Cedar or Lewis street touched.
· Lorraine: Because they are using payloaders with snowblowers on the front...and they only have a few.
· Lorraine: Apparently people aren't watching the news..and don't realize the ENTIRE state is having the same problem..city plows can't push the snow the way they would if they had 8 or 12 inches of snow..with drifts we have over 3 ft of snow on the roads
· Chrissy: Which is understandable but why would the mayor send out 2 robo-calls today assuring everyone 100% of roads would be passable tonight if he knows the extent of equipment available???
· Alicia: The ENTIRE state is not having the same problems at all. We have family all over and we are basically the only ones this bad off, with the exception of a few other towns. We are right on the cromwell line in middletown, and all of our family in cromwell has been plowed out.
· Chrissy:The plow guys are working hard and we understand that but the mayor shouldn't have set unrealistic goals or provided false information! There is no way possible that 80% of the town was done 8 hours ago by reading all of these comments. Just be truthful....tell us we are stuck for a while!!!
· Lisa: Complete bs.. 85% of what. My street has not even smelled a plow... 3 feet of snow 2 1/2 days later. .. no excuses. If there was an emergency no one could get anywhere near us and no one could get out..... Believe me i tried!!!!! Bear hill rd. NO...
· Ellen: Higby 1/2 plowed. One lane.
· Pam: Highmeadow Lane...1 lane @ 5:45pm.....thank you for that
· Kathy: Ten acre rd, and it wasn't cleared.
· Sandy: Birdsey Ave. They just started 15 minutes ago...
· Anthony: Bretton Road, one lane.
· Mel: Hey Sandy, they left Lake St is still not done. Everyone around us is, but they just keep skipping this little section with 3 apt houses on one side of the street between Huntinghill and Durant and us on the other. So close, but no access out yet!
· James: Roberts St. - one very narrow lane
· Ian: Pearl Street is still barely one car width.
· Jennine: Lisa Lane is barely passable however I want to thank Public Works for there dedication to the city. We had a plow stuck on our road during the storm for hours and he never gave up!
· Tina: Waiting for large machinery. Day # 3
· Crystal: a friend wanted me to tell you the farms is still unplowed. they were here at longworth but then left....
· Carla: Arbutus plowed horribly. Came up Arbutus and stopped at Thimble Rock (last road on Arbutus at townline). Really u couldn't do Thimble Rock!

Shakespeare on Film: Top Five Films

Cinema Siren is writing from London this week and preparing to see James McAvoy in "Macbeth" at Trafalgar Transformed.
Shakespeare never goes out of style, as witnessed by the recent release directed by Ralph Fiennes, "Coriolanus," in 2012. Joss Whedon is planning to release a home movie version of "Much Ado About Nothing"— no kidding, it was filmed at his house — on June 7 starring his usual suspects, including Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Fran Kranz and Amy Acker.
If the director of "The Avengers" is doing it, it must be cool… So in honor of my Shakespearean pilgrimage to jolly ole England, here's a little list of suggested viewing for those of you who might want to see some of the best versions of his plays immortalized on celluloid.
*No. 5 "The Taming of the Shrew"* (1967) Directed by Franco Zeffirelli: This play can be seen as quite misogynistic but, depending on your perspective, can also be quite empowering for women. What makes this version so compelling is notoriously manipulative train wreck couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton play the leads. It has an earthy, very late '60s vibe, and includes Michael York, as well as famed Brit Shakespearean actor Cyril Cusack. Cusack's daughter, Sinead, has also become a great actress on the Shakespearean stage, winning a Tony for "Much Ado About Nothing" in 1985. It may seem like everyone is having too much fun, but these actors, some of the best in film, make it look easy.
*No. 4 "King Lear" *(1983) Directed for TV by Michael Elliott: Cinema Siren is extremely biased about the best King Lear, because I saw a version of this one, starring Laurence Olivier and Diana Rigg, onstage. It's maybe impossible to do better than a play featuring those two actors together, although adding John Hurt might do it. This recording has every dark, intense quality you could ask for, with all the actors going from subtlety to physical extravagance and back again, like a great symphony played by the best musicians. Olivier won an Emmy for his performance. He was 75 at the time, making him one of the oldest to perform this extremely demanding role in Shakespeare's longest play. We are lucky to have it to refer to as a study of his great talent. Honorary mention to both the 1997 version with Ian Holm, which is extremely impressive, and the adaptation "Ran" by great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.
*No. 3 "Julius Caesar" *(1953) Directed by Joseph Mankiewicz: This is the famous version with Marlon Brando as Mark Antony and John Gielgud as Cassius. Gielgud was so impressed with Brando's work, he offered to direct him in a stage production of "Hamlet," but it never came to pass. Big egos and big drama on set didn't keep this film from being mesmerizing to watch from start to finish.
*No. 2 "Romeo and Juliet" *(1968) Directed by Zeffirelli: To my mind, this is not only the best version of the play onscreen, but also represents the best of Zeffirelli's cinematic work. Unlike previous versions, the actors hired to play the leads, Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey, age 17 and 15 respectively, were close to the ages the characters would be. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. It was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture.
*No. 1 "Richard III" *(1955) Directed by Laurence Olivier: Imagine the best Shakespearean actors ever filmed all together in one movie. This is it. Arguably the darkest of his plays — I'd say King Lear is the saddest, Macbeth is the angriest and Richard III is the darkest — we have direction by a master thespian who is also playing the lead. John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson, finishing out the trifecta of brilliance, also star. One of the two best Shakespearean actresses ever, Claire Bloom, plays Lady Anne. *#1 Richard III *(1955) Directed by Laurence Olivier: Well, I have to save the best for last. Imagine the best Shakespearean actors ever filmed all together in one movie. This is it. Arguably the darkest of his plays, (I'd say King Lear is the saddest, Macbeth is the angriest and Richard III is the darkest…start your fussing here.) Coginchaug Girls Split a Pair; Playoffs Around the Corner

By Alan Pease
*vs. Old Saybrook*
The Lady Devils travelled to Old Saybrook on Monday the 4^th, and despite a slow start, came away with a comfortable 51-28 victory. Shooting problems resulted in a 13-8 deficit after one period. The problems continued early in the second period, as they had six turnovers in the period before they even got a shot off, half-way through the frame. However, the defense was also clamping down, and the Lady Rams were having even more difficulty in scoring, netting only two points early on in the period.
A Jessica Solomon steal and basket finally knotted the game at 15 all, and a Kim Romanoff bucket off of a Morgan Kuehnle assist put the Devils on top for good, as they took a 19-15 lead at the half, 33-20 after three, ending with the 51-28 victory.
Morgan Kuehnle led the team in three categories – rebounds with 14, points with 12, and blocks with two. She also has three steals and an assist. Jessica Solomon scored ten, adding seven rebounds, two assists, and leading the team in steals with four. Kim Romanoff dropped in nine points, adding three steals, three rebounds and an assist. Audrey Arcari and Olivia Corazzini both scored seven, with Arcari adding four rebounds, three steals and an assist, and Corazzini adding two boards.
Off the bench, Mikayla Wyskiel scored two, adding two rebounds, a steal and an assist. Sidney Trusty had two steals, an assist and a rebound, Caryn Sibiskie scored two, and Naomi Rinaldo had a rebound and a steal.
*vs. Cromwell*
On Thursday, February 7^th, the Devils hosted the undefeated Panthers from Cromwell. The girls kept the game reasonably close for a while, trailing 23-15 after the first period, with a Jessica Solomon bucket off of a Morgan Kuehnle assist drawing Coginchaug within seven at 28-21 with three minutes gone in the period. But it was down-hill from there, as the Devils missed there next nine shots, and Cromwell finished the half on a 9-0 run to take a 37-21 lead at the half.
Their shooting woes continued in the third period, as only baskets by Kuehnle and Romanoff, plus a free throw by Audrey Arcari, raised an otherwise woeful 0-10 performance from the team, as Cromwell led 51-26 after three periods, and left with a 67-40 win.
Morgan Kuehnle was a gain a bright spot for Coginchaug, again nothing a double-double, and leading the team in rebounding with 14, scoring with eleven, and blocks with four. She also had two steals and an assist. Kim Romanoff was the other double digit scorer with ten, adding four assist and four steals. Jessica Solomon scored seven, adding three rebounds and an assist. Audrey Arcari and Olivia Corazzini each scored six points, with Arcari adding four rebounds, four steals and an assist, and Corazzini adding three rebounds and blocking a shot.
Off the bench, Caryn Sibiskie grabbed two rebounds, Mikayla Wyskiel had a rebound and a steal, and Sydney Trusty had a rebound.
Coginchaug is 13-5, 12-4 in the Shoreline conference. After the recent weather problems, and schools being closed on Monday, they hope to play early (4:30) at Morgan on Tuesday the 12^th, and will host H-K on Wednesday the 13^th. Then it will be on to the play-offs, both Shoreline and State class M! Reported by Patch 2 days ago.
