And Miss USA Is...
LAS VEGAS — A 25-year-old contestant from Connecticut won the title of Miss USA in Las Vegas on Sunday night.
Erin Brady of South Glastonbury, Conn., won the beauty pageant at the Planet Hollywood hotel-casino after strutting in a white sparkly gown and answering a question about the U.S. Supreme Court's decision upholding widespread DNA tests. Asked if she agreed with the decision, Brady said she did.
Brady gets the crown and a New York apartment for one year. She is expected to spend her title reign on a nationwide speaking tour and raising breast and ovarian cancer awareness, the organization's official cause.
During the swimsuit competition, the ladies threw off sheer wraps to reveal skimpy blue, gold and orange bikinis. They strutted in stilettos to the Jonas Brothers' live performance of "Pom Poms."
The women also strutted to Calvin Harris' electronica-infused "Sweet Nothing" in an array of spangled, flowing evening gowns. Trains, gauze and long wavy hair were the preferred looks.
Unlike the rival Miss America pageant, Miss USA doesn't ask its queens to perform a talent or choose a charity mission.
The judge's panel included over-the-top fashion designer Betsey Johnson, "Biggest Loser" star Bob Harper and "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me" personality Mo Rocca.
Rocca praised the pageant as a prime example of Americana backstage. He said he was looking to appoint a new Miss USA who reminded him of Abraham Lincoln "without the beard."
The pageant aired live on NBC, hosted by Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers pop act and Giuliana Rancic, co-anchor of "E! News." The Jonas Brothers and DJ Pauly D were expected to perform.
The winner will represent the United States at the Miss Universe pageant in the winter.
Last year's Miss USA, Olivia Culpo, won that international crown, becoming the first Miss USA to ascend to Miss Universe in 16 years. Meriwether, who had been first runner-up, took over for her for the remainder of the year.
The Miss USA hopefuls stayed at the Planet Hollywood casino for the past week, but the flashing slot machines and ubiquitous oversized novelty drinks have been little more than a background to a stuffed schedule of product tie-in media events, including hairdo contests and paddleboat competitions.
The animal rights organization People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals is using the pageant to stage a protest of fur and the tradition of awarding furs to winners of some state pageants.
PETA has made a provocative ad featuring four nude former Miss USA winners. The tagline is: "Feel Beautiful in Your Own Skin, and Let Animals Keep Theirs."

Finalists, Judges Named in 6th Danvers Idol Contest
Patch Danvers, MA --
Ten finalists are now on their way for a shot at becoming the next Danvers Idol.
Thirty-eight singers performed before a panel of judges in a preliminary round Saturday at Danvers Community Access Television studios. The preliminaries were new to the contest this year, and contest organizers announced the names of the finalists and judges on Sunday evening.
Alexandra Valenti, Brittany Hill, Eben Bein, Greg Knight, Isaac Willnow, Jilly Martin, Katie Donnelly, Kerrin Mullen, Olivia Wendel and Philip Pereira will next perform June 28 (7 p.m.) with a song of their choice before a live audience and the four judges at Danvers High School.
The top three contestants will then perform again that night (with two songs) before a winner is crowned. The audience, which will be able to vote, will actually serve as the fifth judge during the finals and determine the top three singers.
Third prize is $100, second prize is $150 and first prize is $500 plus the opportunity to perform live before a crowd of 25,000 or more at the July 3 fireworks at Plains Park. All prizes also include studio recording time.
This year's judges are Karen Nascembeni, the director of corporate and community relations at North Shore Music Theatre and Theatre by the Sea, Tom Page of Decibel Architects, Jacyn Tremblay of Boston pop and R&B female vocal group Jada, and lastly Erika Van Pelt, a top 10 finalist in Season 11 of American Idol.
Van Pelt, a Rhode Island native, has continued to perform professionally and during intermission on June 28, she will debut a selection from her upcoming CD that will be released this fall.
Page's studio creates and produces original music and licensed music, much of which has featured in television commercials and Tremblay and Jada won the “Outstanding Pop/R&B Music Act of the Year” at the 2008 Boston Music Awards.
"The caliber of participants was top rate, and the judges and producers had a very difficult time deciding the top 10," said Gardner Trask in an announcement. Trask is an organizer of the contest and a board member of the Danvers Family Festival.
Saturday's preliminaries served to kick off the following 19 days of this year's festival around town. The local Idol contest is in its sixth year.
Saturday's show will be broadcast on DCAT after editing and will be available online in the “Video on Demand” section of the DCAT website.

Ahern Students Say No to Bullying with PSAs
Patch Foxborough, MA --
The message was simple yet clear in the anti-bullying videos made by members of the Ahern Middle School Climate Task Force, never is bullying or doing nothing to prevent bullying acceptable.
Presenting a collection of anti-bullying PSAs made by students at the Ahern School to the Foxborough School Committee, eighth graders Alexis Hill-Cook and Ryan McCormack both showed passion for promoting not only an anti-bullying message but to stand up and say something if one witnesses bullying.
Students in grades five through eight were challenged to create a 30-80 second long PSA video as part of a contest to promote one of three actions: Stop Meanness, Be Kind and Stand Up, Speak Out (against bullying or meanness).
The three action statements resulted from the analysis of student survey data collected by the Student School Climate Task Force. In an effort to promote the three actions, the Task Force came up with the idea of the video contest. Fifth through eighth grade students competed for the winning prize of a Patriot Place Gift Card.
“Kids can relate to those types of situation. Once people see that it touches their heart and make people realize that this is an important type of thing,” said Hill-Cook.
The two students explained that the idea stemmed from watching the Daily Two student news broadcast that takes place each morning on the Ahern's closed circuit TV.
"Every morning students are engaged by the school's Daily Two broadcast club's message and this seemed a great way to engage students in a message from students to students," McCormack said.
In his video, McCormack plays a boy that gets made fun of while the taunts appear on his face. The visibility of the insults is meant to be a metaphor to the lasting effect that words can have on a person.
“Once somebody says something to you, even in the future if you become friends, the mean thing that they said stays in your mind. It just doesn't go away,” McCormick said.
McCormack, one of the winners for eighth grade, pointed out that the messages portrayed in the two winning eighth grade videos were very different, explaining that one was directed toward the victim and the other toward the bully.
In agreement, Alexis emphasized the importance of the messages presented in each of the videos emphasizing that students can relate to the types of situations portrayed in the videos.
The winning videos were shown on the Ahern Middle School’s broadcasting system for a week and will be shown to the town though Foxborough Cable Access in the near future.
The PSA winners included:
Grade five - Emme Ricci, Jamie DeVellis and Jyla Sulham
Grade 6 - Andrew Prevett, Shapel Feaster, Sam DeMilia, Jean Luma, Ahmed Mohamed, Spencer San Bento
Grade 7 - Jaci Anderson, Olivia Balabanis, Emily Bubencik, Faith Perry
Grade 8 - PSA 1 - Molly Crocker, Alexis Hill-Cook, Geena Holdcraft, Samantha Johnston, Georgia Munroe and Alyssa Relyea; PSA 2 -Ryan McCormack, Jack Lovely, and Olivia Manson. Reported by Patch 18 hours ago.

Tampax Pearl Active and pro-surfer Bethany Hamilton are joining forces to shine a spotlight on awesomely active girls - those who have the confidence to get off the sideline and into the game. The Awesomely Active Girls Challenge is designed to celebrate and reward girls who share pictures of moments when they have been awesomely active. In addition to being featured on the Tampax Facebook page, girls have the opportunity to win a great prize, which includes a chance for their photo to appear in Tampax Pearl Active advertising.
"Between surfing, traveling and now planning a wedding, I'm excited for an awesomely active summer and want girls to join me in showing off their active moments too," says Bethany Hamilton. "I am happy to be partnering with Tampax Pearl Active because they offer high performance protection for high performance girls just like me who would never think of letting their periods keep them from hanging ten or biking hard. This contest is all about cheering on each other and celebrating those active moments when all eyes are on them."
For one month, from June 21 until July 21, girls can enter the Awesomely Active Girls Challenge by submitting a photo of them taking on their favorite activity with 140 character caption on Facebook.com/Tampax. Beginning July 29 and through October 6 the community can place votes for their favorite moment. Each week, a winner will be selected and highlighted as the "Awesomely Active Girl of the Week," not only receiving the spotlight but also $500, a year's supply of Tampax Pearl Active and additional product to share with their closest friends or teammates.
"The Tampax brand strives to help girls and women live life without limits, especially in their most active moments" said Lindsay Gilbert, Tampax Marketing Manager. "Tampax is thrilled to partner with Bethany, the ultimate awesomely active girl, to help us celebrate all girls and their active moments - from surfing to hiking to yoga, we want to see how girls are getting in on the action no matter what time of the month it is."
In fact, Tampax Pearl Active will be supporting thousands of girls in their active moments at the 11^th Annual Solstice in Times Square yoga event in New York City. On June 21, active girls can challenge themselves to master expert poses or visit the Tampax Pearl Active booth for some active fun with their friends. Bethany Hamilton will also stop by to talk about her active moments. Girls onsite and at home can stay looped in on the activities by using and following the hashtag #AwesomelyActive.
This spring, Procter & Gamble's (P&G) leading feminine protection brand Tampax introduced Tampax Pearl Active and, for the first time ever, Tampax Pearl Liners. The latest innovation from the Tampax family, Tampax Pearl Liners, are so thin that girls will be able to forget it and go. With up to 8 hours of protection, Tampax Pearl Active offers FormFit™ protection that gently expands to fit your unique shape - helping to stop leaks before they happen and allow you to shine during the moments that matter most. Gone are the days of faking notes to get out of gym class, these new additions are designed to help girls stay in the game to score that winning goal without letting their period block them.

New Survey: Only One in Three Parents Read Bedtime Stories with their Children Every Night; Children More Likely to Spend Time with TV or Video Games than Books
Macy's and Reading Is fundamental launch annual Be Book Smart campaign June 21 to support children's literacy.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 20, 2013
Despite research on the importance of reading with children from a young age, few parents with kids age eight and younger are engaged in nightly reading, according to a new survey from Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Macy's. The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, finds that only one in three parents (33 percent) read bedtime stories with their children every night, and 50 percent of parents say their children spend more time with TV or video games than with books. More than 1,000 parents across the U.S. completed the survey online in April.
Results of the survey are revealed as Macy's and RIF enter the 10th year of a partnership that will deliver its 10 millionth book to children in need nationwide. Be Book Smart launches tomorrow, June 21, and invites customers coast-to-coast to give $3 at any Macy's register in-store to help provide a book for a child in their local community. Macy's will donate the full amount to RIF, and customers will receive a coupon for $10 off an in-store purchase of $50 or more. The month-long fundraising effort ends July 21. Last year, Macy's helped to raise $4.8 million to provide 1.6 million books to children who would not get a new book otherwise.
"Bedtime stories build the foundation for future achievement. For a decade, Macy's and RIF have worked together to get books and literacy resources to children in need, giving children and parents tools they need to dream big," said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental. "While much news in this survey is encouraging, there is more work to be done - work that Be Book Smart and our partnership with Macy's will help make possible."
Full survey results are highlighted in an executive summary by Harris Interactive, and key findings include:
Findings on the amount of time spent reading:
-Eighty-seven percent of parents say they currently read bedtime stories with their children.
-But only one in three parents (33 percent) read bedtime stories daily with their children.
-Children of families with an annual household income below $35,000 are more likely to watch TV (40 percent) than read books (35 percent).
Findings on printed book use:
-Printed books (76 percent) are the format of choice for most parents of children age eight and younger.
-Twice as many children prefer a printed book (20 percent) over an e-book (9 percent), say parents who read both types of books to their children.
-Less than one in five parents (17 percent) use a combination of printed and e-books.
Existing research on literacy shows the importance of starting early:
-Children who don't read well by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school than proficient readers, according to a report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
-Two-thirds of U.S. fourth graders - and more than four-fifths of those from low-income families - are not reading proficiently, according to the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress.
Many literacy studies also show a direct correlation between income level and the number of books in the household, creating even more obstacles to developing children's literacy. RIF works to help overcome these challenges by delivering free books and literacy resources to children and families who need them most.
"We are proud to join our customers in supporting RIF's work to help children have better access to books and develop a lifelong love of reading," said Martine Reardon, chief marketing officer, Macy's. "In talking about our partnership with RIF, I hear so often about the memories created between a parent and a child through reading bedtime stories. This summer, we are especially excited to be hitting a milestone that will enable our 10 millionth book to be distributed as a result of Macy's partnership with RIF."
Since 2004, Macy's has helped raise more than $25.8 million for RIF. Through customer-supported fundraising campaigns, in-store events and volunteer activities, Macy's has donated funds and resources to further the important message of literacy for future success. Macy's longstanding support has enabled RIF to promote literacy at all levels, from buying books for children and training educators to providing resources to parents.
Macy's customers can take part in supporting children's reading and bedtime stories by donating to the Be Book Smart campaign from June 21 to July 21, taking part in efforts to contribute the campaign's 10 millionth book to a child in need.
Facebook Sweepstakes:
As part of the Be Book Smart campaign, Macy's and RIF will host a sweepstakes on Facebook to encourage supporters to share information about the campaign and post images of quotes from favorite authors to their personal timelines via a Facebook app. Each week, one winner will be awarded a $500 Macy's gift card. ‘Drinking Buddies’ Trailer: Olivia Wilde and Beer Make Everything Better
Olivia Wilde and Jake Johnson play two good-looking people who work in a brewery. There’s flirtation, lots of beer drinking and laughter. The only problem is that they’re both in relationships: Johnson’s paired with the lovely Anna Kendrick and Wilde is with Ron Livingston. When Livingston’s character calls things off, the predictable (but probably still...Read more»

Zoe Yates: Graduate Fashion Week 2013
Firstly, I just wanted to make a quick apology for the delay in publishing this blog entry. unfortunately i've been suffering from a tummy problem over the last few weeks that resulted in me having to attend hospital. I'm pleased to say that I'm now feeling much better and have plenty more stories to share with you over the coming weeks. Anyway, less about me and more about the wonderful Graduate Fashion Week...
Graduate Fashion Week is one of my favorite events of the year and this year's event was no different. Graduate Fashion Week continues to be the place for students to show their creativity and for fashion brands and retailers to identify their future design talent.
The event showcases the very best talent from 40 of the UK's premier fashion and design universities and 16 International Universities (including Parsons, BUNKA, FIT and Istituto Marangoni),
This year the show hall seemed to have a different feel about it. The format included more career advice and support for students. GFW offered a dedicated career guide service providing a range of services including general careers information, CV writing skills, business start-up advice and pre-university help for those leaving college.
On the subject of recruitment, I hear that last year George employed approximately 70 of the most talented graduates that took part in the GFW show - an impressive number of recruits for a single brand. This of course included last year's gold award winner, Chloe Jones, from Bath Spa.
This subtle change to the show format I think is great. In general Britain produces some of the worlds leading fashion students and having worked with a number of young and emerging designers, I know first hand how difficult it can be to get a career within the industry. This small change makes a big difference and I hope to see it again in future shows.
The event has always been extremely well organised, compared to previous years, this years event overall seemed to have a more professional look and feel about it with creativity from the colleges and universities at an all time high. In past years I've sometimes had the feeling that students may have been 'playing it safe' with some of their designs. However 2013 was very different with brilliant creativity at the heart of nearly every design on show.
The collections on show were so creative that they bordered on art, with a number of designers using bright bold colours, a multitude of materials and amazing prints to really show of their design talents.

One designer that I thought was fantastic this year was Adam Jones from Manchester School of art with his cat print detailed skirts.
Others that really impressed were Edinburgh University with their men's bearded models, UCA Epson for their creative use of materials and Ravensbourne College for their brilliant #SmileOn marketing campaign.

*Gala Night*
Gala night at Graduate Fashion week is always a special evening and this year the event seemed bigger and better than ever. Attracting some of the biggest names and celebrities from across the industry, it really is a key date in the social diary.
We spotted Lady Victoria Harvey, David Gandy (who created a lot of excitement amongst the girls) and Hilary Alexander in the audience, to name but a few.
The first three rows in the audience appeared to contain a lot of well known brands and design houses keenly looking for their next design champion; I know ASOS were in attendance as were a number of other leading retailers.
Presenting the awards this year was Henry Holland and Zara Martin.
The catwalk shows during the Gala were amazing, featuring children's wear, womenswear and menswear collections.
I particularly liked the brilliant use of diverse colours and materials shown in this years collections plus the return of the children's collection for a second year was met with real fondness.
Of course the Gala evening is all about the awards and this year we really had some amazingly talented winners. The winner of this year's Gold award went to Lauren Smith from Edinburgh College of art.

Fiona Lambert, George Brand Director, commented:
"We've had a fantastic week meeting all of the graduates and seeing their work. We've been genuinely amazed by the quality, creativity and professionalism of this year's graduates. We chose Lauren as the George Gold Award winner because her designs reflected her character and showed real vision and craftsmanship. I'm looking forward to working with her and producing her range for George and George.com."
Other key awards went to:
Womenswear Award - Hannah Williams, UCA Epsom
Menswear Award - Shauni Douglas & Olivia Creber, Edinburgh College of Art
Life Achievement Award - Suzy Menkes OBE, head fashion reporter and editor for the International Herald Tribune.
A full list of award winners is available here http://www.gfw.org.uk
Overall this years Graduate Fashion Week seemed bigger and better than ever before. The designs on display in the show hall and on the catwalks were hugely impressive but most importantly, GFW continues to demonstrate the huge talent our colleges and universities have to offer to the industry.
Congratulations to all those who took part and I truly cannot wait until next year's event!

Kim and Kanye make a clear choice for their new baby's crib
*Kim and Kanye make a clear choice for their new baby's crib*
If you're keeping up with the Kardashians, you certainly know that Kim and Kanye West had their baby this weekend, a girl. While we wait to hear the baby's name and whether it will start with K, other nursery news has been coming in. Turns out Kim and Kanye chose the same crib that Beyonce and Jay-Z use for their baby—the clear acrylic Nurseryworks Vetro Crib, $3,950. Consumer Reports hasn't tested the Vetro but its brand-mate, the Nurseryworks Abbey, $580, is one of our eight top crib picks for safety, durability, and ease of use.
In our crib tests, the Nurseryworks Abbey was excellent overall with sturdy construction and hardware. It excelled in safety, thanks to the strength of its slats and mattress supports, and complies with federal crib safety standards. The Nurseryworks Abbey has easy-to-understand instructions for assembly but because the pieces are heavy, requires two people to put it together. The crib can be converted to a toddler or day bed as a child grows, but that requires a kit or parts that cost extra. Like the Nurseryworks Vetro, the Abbey has solid panels, not slats, at the head and foot.
For most people, $580 is a lot to pay for a crib and $3,950 is exorbitant. But you can spend a lot less and get a crib that is still stylish and safe. The europa baby Palisades Lifetime, $350, a CR Best Buy, was excellent overall and very easy to assemble with a big-bed conversion kit that's sold separately. The modern Graco Lauren Signature, $190, scored excellent for safety, construction, and ease of assembly, and is among the least expensive of our recommended models. The Baby Mod Olivia, $300, was another very good model whose conversion kit for a toddler or day-bed is included with the crib.
The fact that the Nurseryworks Vetro is clear serves as a good reminder that cribs should be kept clear of bumpers, quilts, stuffed animals and pillows. The safest way for a baby to sleep is in a crib dressed in pajamas on a snug-fitting sheet. Make sure the crib's mattress, which is usually bought separately, fits correctly. If you can place more than two fingers between the mattress and the frame, the mattress is not the right fit for that frame.
We also heard that Beyonce and Jay-Z gave Kim and Kanye a blinged-out high chair studded with Swarovski crystals, just like the one they have for their baby, Blue Ivy. Again, you can spend a lot less and get a high chair that looks good and no doubt is easier to clean than one studded with gems. The eight models on our list of top high chair picks range in price from $85 to $250.
