Killing Season trailer: look who's stalking – it's De Niro and Travolta

Together at last, the screen titans play two ex-soldiers at cross purposes. Imagine the You're the One That I Want scene from Grease but with Travis Bickle instead of Olivia Newton John

Even if you forget any of the terrible films they've made over the course of the last decade, you have to admit that the thought of seeing Robert De Niro and John Travolta onscreen together is still a tiny bit exciting. Imagine: the raw ferocity of Travis Bickle combined with the lithe athleticism of Tony Manero. The unflappable cool of Vincent Vega combined with the ungoverned id of Jake LaMotta. The bloke from The Big Wedding combined with the guy from Old Dogs. Together. At last.

And now it's happening. De Niro and Travolta will soon appear together in a thriller called Killing Season. Imagine the scene between De Niro and Pacino in Heat, but with the man from Look Who's Talking instead of Pacino. Imagine the You're the One That I Want scene from Grease, but with the man from Little Fockers instead of Olivia Newton John. That's the sort of spectacle Killing Season offers. Let's look at the trailer to see what delights we're in for.

This is Robert De Niro. He used to be a soldier, but now he's withdrawn from society. He spends his days doing situps in a hut that's too dark to screengrab with any degree of success, which is why I'm showing you a closeup of his face.

And this is John Travolta. He used to be a … dear God, what's going on with that beard? That's a genuinely horrible beard. That might be the worst beard in the entire history of time. What was he thinking? I wonder if it goes all the way down his neck.

It does! It does go all the way down his neck! So, just to recap – Robert De Niro used to be a soldier, and John Travolta will apparently do anything for a dare. Even growing a beard so staggering unattractive that it makes me want to poke my eyes out with hot corn-cob forks.

Oh, and John Travolta used to be a soldier too. Although he was a bad soldier, one who committed atrocities long ago in a land where everything is sepia. Maybe they know each other. Maybe Killing Season is going to be about their vicious rivalry.

Or perhaps not. From this still, it looks like Travolta and De Niro are old friends. It looks like they get together like this all the time, Travolta to drink spirits out of bottles and De Niro to see how hard he can fart into his armchair.

But wait – John Travolta still carries out assassinations on the sly, and it looks like his newest target is a badly photoshopped version of Robert De Niro. Still, Travolta is a professional. Surely he won't confuse his old pal Robert De Niro with the obvious menace that is the badly photoshopped version of Robert De Niro.

Whoops! Too late. Travolta gets his wires crossed and starts to hunt the real Robert De Niro. But luckily he's only hunting him with arrows, and it's apparently quite easy to duck out of the way of those.

However, something goes wrong with De Niro's "duck the arrow" evasion strategy and he's captured by Travolta, who promptly hangs him upside down and waggles a knife at him. Surely only something truly inexplicable, like some timber falling down on to John Travolta's head, can save the day now.

Well, that was fortunate. Some timber falls on to John Travolta's head. This is how the Killing Season trailer ends, so we can presume this is how Killing Season also ends. You don't have to pay for a ticket now. You're welcome. Reported by guardian.co.uk 2 days ago.

Hartshill hairdressers raise £4k for school pupils minibus

Hartshill hairdressers raise £4k for school pupils minibus This is Staffordshire --

INTREPID hairdressers have raised £4,000 towards a new minibus for children with learning difficulties after climbing a mountain.

Staff from John Belfield Salon in Hartshill made their way up Mount Snowdon to raise cash for the Merryfields Community Special School in Kidsgrove.

The group were inspired after meeting Olivia Dunn, aged 10, sister of John Belfield's first-year apprentice, Georgia Dunn, aged 16.

Olivia suffers from global developmental delay, a condition which means she is not developing as expected.

Georgia, who has worked at the salon part-time for 18 months, said: "Whenever Olivia comes in to have her hair cut she's always helping sweep up. John says she does a better job than I do.

"When the salon decided they wanted to raise some money for local causes they thought of the school. Olivia loves going to school so it's brilliant that John and the team selected them."

Merryfields supports children aged two to 11 with moderate to severe learning difficulties.

Salon staff started their fund-raising challenge in October, holding cake sales, Christmas present collections and collections of clothes for other charities including the Salvation Army and Elizabeth Trust.

But they set themselves a target of raising £4,000 towards the cost of a new minibus – fitted with a wheelchair ramp and specialist equipment – for the Merryfields school by summer.

Salon owner, John Belfield, who also took part in a sponsored 500m swim in Cumbria's Coniston Lake for the cause, said: "We've always been very involved in supporting local causes but we decided to start really going for it by holding different events to raise cash for charity – we got a bit addicted really.

"And after visiting the school I was really keen to help them get a new minibus for the kids.

"A lot of the donations have come from clients as well as friends. They've been wonderfully supportive and we're very grateful to them.

"It's been a team-building exercise for the staff here and I think everyone has enjoyed themselves. Seeing everyone at the top of Snowdon was a wonderful moment and I was chuffed to finish my swim."

The team of 12 from the salon climbed Snowdon on Sunday in about five hours.

Stylist Emily Obradovic said: "It was really tough, much harder than anyone expected,

"But everyone got to the top and although we were tempted to get the train back down, we all walked down the mountain together as well.

"The walk has brought us closer as a team and I'm really pleased we've raised so much money in a relatively short period of time."

Salon staff handed over a cheque to deputy headteacher Phil Petch and teaching assistants Francesca Meli and Kelly Amphlett yesterday.

Phil, who has worked at the school for three years, said: "We're in desperate need of a new minibus because the ones we had just aren't up to scratch.

"The bus allows us to take children out of the school into a real world to teach them important life skills. This cheque will go a long way to helping cover the cost. We are incredibly grateful to the salon." Reported by This is 23 hours ago.

NAPW Los Angeles, CA Local Chapter Learned How to More Effectively Use Social Media at April Networking Meeting

National Association of Professional Women Los Angeles, CA Local Chapter hosted a social media seminar presented by Chapter President Ruth Garcia-Corrales in April.

Garden City, NY (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Members and guests of the NAPW Los Angeles, CA Local Chapter gathered on April 17th for a professional networking meeting.

The group of professional women enjoyed an evening of getting to know one another, supporting each other’s professional endeavors and networking.

Attendees also got expert tips from Chapter President Ruth Garcia-Corrales when she delivered a presentation on how to more effectively use social media.

President Ruth Garcia-Corrales kicked off the meeting with a warm welcome to members and guests.

"Social Networking and Marketing has grown to become vital to business, no matter the size. It's a great way to get your name out there and directly communicate with your target market!" said President Ruth Garcia-Corrales.

She then informed the group that according to the organization's bylaws her two-year term was up, and a new election was going to have to happen. Without one moment’s hesitation, members unanimously voted her back into this office.

Ms. Garcia-Corrales began her social media presentation with a survey of how many people at the meeting had Facebook profiles. That answer was impressive; only one member did not have one.

The Chapter President asked the group if they knew that less than 16 percent (on average) of their fans see posts because of EdgeRank, which determines what pages it will show on their News Feeds.

Ms. Garcia-Corrales told the members and guests that if Facebook doesn’t post all their posts to all their friends, EdgeRank is why.

There are three elements that EdgeRank reviews: affinity, weight and time decay.

Affinity is measured by the relationship of the user with person posting—this is based on frequency of contact; frequency of logins on Facebook; the number of likes, comments, shares, etc. The more interaction between the user and the person posting, the higher your affinity, she told the audience.

Weight is based on the different objects; for example, photos have more weight than links, and comments are four times “heavier” than likes.

A newer post is more likely to appear than an old one, she told the group.

“For more engagement, posts with less than 80 characters will be seen 27 percent more often than longer posts, according to a Buddy Media Study,” said President Garcia-Corrales. “Asking questions double the possibilities of participation, and photos draw more likes. When planning your post, think of how to make it more interesting.”

The Chapter President went on to give the group of professional women a number of examples for could be making their Facebook posts more effective.

The following attendees introduced themselves at the April Los Angeles Local Chapter meeting:

Olivia Lam: Graphic Artist/Designer; Tara Donato: Business Development and Client Services Executive, BusinessTalk; Maureen Teppedino: Home-based Business Owner in Venice; Beth Kandell is a Nutritionist and an Entrepreneur, Simply Fine Gourmet; Anita Finlay is a professional Actor; Anita showed the group her book, Dirty Words on Clean Skin which is #1 on Amazon.com in the Women-in-Politics genre; Daphne Germaine: Survival Kit Creator and Mentor; Jeannine Chanin-Penn: Creative Director and Writer at HBO; Lorri Herman, Executive Regional Vice President and Independent Consultant for Arbonne; Carol Johnson is a Professional Singer/Songwriter/Actress, who has written songs for the Jackson Five and Motown Records; Eileen Licerio: Special-Projects Liaison for Tribridge; Dr. Estie (Esther) B. Hess is a Psychotherapist at Center For the Developing Mind, where she works with children. Daisy Marks speaks passionately about her cause célèbre. She sits on the board of Achievable, a clinic that provides services to low-income families, individuals and especially children; Lisa-Catherine Cohen: Renaissance Artist, Author of "The Loaded Cufflink: Ten Ways to Survive and Forgive a Parent’s Rage," and Teacher of a 15-week course called Guided Autobiography™ at a retirement home in Reseda; Marlene Granderson: CEO and Creator of Granderson IGI Holdings, Marlene is a Real Estate Investment Specialist. Daphne Chocolatier; Ruth Klein: Branding Strategist and Productivity Coach and Author of six bestsellers, titles include, The De-Stress Diva and Time Management Secrets for Working Women; Ruth Garcia-Corrales: Los Angeles Chapter President and Advertising and Marketing Manager of Curacao.

Is there a shortage of TV actors?

$

Channel hop on any given evening and the chances are you will see the same faces, but in different roles. Do you have a favourite overworked star?

With so many long-running drama series criss-crossing our TV screens, the modern malaise of the same actors cropping up in multiple fictions is becoming ever more noticeable.

The problem was pinpointed a couple of weeks back when the actor Michael McElhatton appeared in two shows that went out concurrently on two different channels and had an enormous impact on both storylines. Anyone watching one after the other had every right to be confused.

If you don't recognise the name, you would recognise the noble forehead and striking features if you followed ace BBC2 serial-killer drama The Fall, in which he played Belfast's corrupt chief of police, Rob Breedlove, and season three of HBO's Game Of Thrones on Sky Atlantic, in which he is Roose Bolton, venal Bannerman of the North and Lord of the Dreadfort.

Thanks to the lottery of scheduling, it turned out to be a memorable night for McElhatton, an actor who's been on our screens since the early 90s and also writes (notably, RTÉ comedy Paths To Freedom). However, his duality was problematic for those of us in the business of suspending our disbelief.

McElhatton, Dublin born and based, is one of a number of Irish and Northern Irish actors in the American-made Game Of Thrones, large chunks of which are filmed in Northern Ireland. The Fall, too, was shot in the Northern Irish capital. This is great news for local talent. But GoT's vast cast means incidental appearances from countless recognisable faces, statistically bound to be in something else at the same time.

Further down The Fall's cast was Belfast's Ian McElhinney, as gangster Morgan Monroe. He, too, is in Game Of Thrones, as knight Ser Barriston Selmy, also seen in last Monday night's episode. Viewers who watch too much telly, as I do, were also forced to toggle between Archie Panjabi as a pathologist in The Fall and as a private investigator in long-running US legal drama The Good Wife, on More4.

It's more noticeable when lead actors take on too much TV work (and if the actors of my acquaintance are anything to go by, fear of "resting" is enough to convince them to take any job that's offered). Thus, within a week of ITV whodunnit Broadchurch ending, both its detectives, the in-demand Olivia Colman and David Tennant, appeared in different roles - respectively, The Suspicions of Mr Whicher and The Politician's Husband. Tennant barely had time to highlight his hair. The redoubtable Rebecca Front fronted two consecutive new comedies two Thursdays ago: Up The Women on BBC3 and Psychobitches on Sky Arts. And anyone playing catch-up with Friday Night Lights on Sky Atlantic and Nashville on More4 has to constantly refocus between Connie Britton as a Texas high school guidance counsellor and a Tennessee country star.

But it's usually the supporting players ("guest" and "recurring" cast, to use the US caste system) who create unwitting daisy chains. Eric Close is mayor Teddy Conrad in Nashville, but also lawyer Travis Tanner in legal dramedy Suits (shown here on Dave). We had the measure of Gina Torres as law partner Jessica Pearson in Suits but have recently had to adjust to her as FBI wife Bella Crawford in Hannibal on Sky Living. Jessica's partner on Suits – played by another Northern Irishman, Conleth Hill – is simultaneously baldy eunuch Varys in Game Of Thrones. Long-form US shows = huge casts = inevitable crossover.

I could go on. Dallas Roberts was a conflicted scientist in AMC's The Walking Dead and Julianna Margulies' gay brother in The Good Wife; Michael Huisman an itinerant musician in HBO's Treme but a successful producer in Nashville, while Kim Dickens, a bolshy chef in Treme, is Shelby, a repentant mum in Friday Night Lights ...

Anyone else have a pet dual-action actor on TV currently?

I enjoy pretending they're playing the same character, but in a different setting. For example, David Bradley, star of Broadchurch and Game Of Thrones: he left his newsagent's shop in Dorset after being wrongly accused of being a paedophile and relocated to Westeros to start a new life as a polygamist lord with a nasty grudge … Reported by guardian.co.uk 2 hours ago.

Former Miss USA winners say “no” to fur- and clothing Former Miss USA pageant winner 2003, Susie Castillo has decided to strip down and say "no" to fur along with three other Miss USA winners Shanna Moakler (1995), Shandi Finnessey (2004) and Alyssa Campanella (2011), who have all teamed up with the animal rights group PETA in a sexy new ad campaign touting the phrase "Feel Beautiful in Your Own Skin and Let Animals Keep Theirs." The new campaign was sparked in an effort to keep fur out of pageants. In addition to posing for the pictures, the Boston native Castillo has taken it upon herself to let people know how strongly she feels about this campaign. Castillo recently sent a letter to the Miss Massachusetts pageant thanking them " from the bottom of my heart" for not awarding furs to the pageant winners, something that is still done in some states. She also  admitted in an interview with PETA that she has always been an animal lover and the things they have to go through for fashion is insane. According to PETA, although this is not a season for fur,  summer is one of the worst seasons for animals with many of them, especially the young ones, dying of heat exhaustion in cramped conditions. Other celebrities who have chosen to bear it all for PETA include Charlize Theron, Olivia Munn and Elizabetta Canalis. Reported by metronews 11 hours ago.

Films will screen June 14 at the event near Palm Springs

Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Seven students and two alumni of The Film School at Santa Fe University of Art and Design(SFUAD) will screen their short films during the inaugural AMFM Fest: Art, Music, Film & More, held June 13–16 at the UltraStar Mary Pickford Theatre, the Cathedral City Town Square and other venues in Cathedral City, Calif.

The AMFM Fest, founded by SFUAD screenwriting faculty member Rich Henrich, features more than 50 films (including six world premieres), dozens of live shows, comedy, fine art, spoken word, seminars, the Celebrity Indy Kart Race and more. Celebrity guests include Michael Madsen, Ed Asner, Jason London, Jason Mewes, David Zayas, Tinsel Korey and Billy Wirth, as well as filmmakers Monte Hellman, Adrian Belic, Gary King and Jesse Baget.

The SFUAD student films will screen on Friday, June 14, at 10 a.m. during the special Santa Fe University of Art and Design Shorts Program. Most of the films, made in a production class taught by Belle Allen, were created by students from Mexico and Brazil who are studying at SFUAD. They include:

An old-fashioned story of love and longing, featuring the inventive use of green screen and 3D modeling technology.
10 minutes, 20 seconds

A story about Syd and Liv, two broke college students who find an interesting way to pay off their student debt.
9 minutes, 48 seconds

Parallel by alumna Jozelle Anderson (Las Vegas), Sydney Latchaw and Olivia Nelson
Through the eyes of two young women who approach the world in very different ways, this film portrays how parallel situations can have vast emotional reactions.
5 minutes, 38 seconds

Allen will participate in the student screenings, along with Paula Amanda, associate chair of The Film School at SFUAD.

“In the ever-changing landscape of storytelling exhibition, it’s an honor for our students to not only participate in a film festival like the new AMFM, but also to network with other musicians, artists and filmmakers,” said Chris Eyre, chair of The Film School at SFUAD. “I think this type of more complete media and entertainment experience is the future of film festivals.”

All films were selected by an independent judging panel and are being presented by Film 4 Change, an international foundation based in Uganda that uses film and arts to help talented people from marginalized communities around the world tell their stories through filmmaking and other art forms. Its mission is to “bring communities together through the power of story and the art of laughter while showcasing the best emerging talent and thought leaders in art, music, film, photography and comedy.”

“This year, the AMFM Fest will proudly premiere five short films from Santa Fe University of Art and Design’s film program,” said Henrich. “Film 4 Change is committed to providing a venue for this next generation of talented filmmakers. We realize how critical it is to their future success to recognize and unceasingly encourage their accomplishments. I have always been a tremendous advocate of the independent film voice, and I feel honored to meet this new generation of filmmakers with open arms.”

New York and Hong Kong--Media OutReach--15 May, 2013-- New York-based fashion brand alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet and Asia's leading retail, brand management and distribution company ImagineX Group announced today an exclusive strategic partnership to develop the brand in Greater China and Southeast Asia through the opening of 23 points of sale over the next five years.

ImagineX will commence the rollout with the first free-standing alice + olivia store in Hong Kong's International Financial Centre (ifc) in June with more stores in Hong Kong, mainland China, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore to follow.

alice + olivia was launched in 2002 and has since grown to more than 800 points of sale in more than 50 countries. The brand first entered Greater China through a wholesale relationship with ImagineX's sister company, the iconic, luxury department store Lane Crawford, in 2008 and has been one of the best performing contemporary brands in its stores in Hong Kong and China. The China retail rollout is a significant driver in an international expansion plan.

Stacey Bendet, CEO and Creative Director, alice + olivia says: "China is the most exciting area to me right now! It's amazing for me to have the opportunity to introduce the world of alice + olivia to a culture and woman that I have been fascinated by and admired for a long time. It's like being able to introduce yourself to someone you've always wanted to meet."

alice + olivia President, Deanna Berkeley added: "As our brand continues its global expansion, we're thrilled to announce a strategic partnership with ImagineX, a leader in the Asian market and an expert in brand development. The partnership with ImagineX provides an ideal platform to build on our current success within Asia. The fashion savvy generation emerging out of Greater China is seeking new ways to express their individuality, and ImagineX's wealth of expertise is the perfect vehicle to bring our brand's unique vision and fresh sensibility to this consumer. We anticipate the ImagineX partnership will account for up to 20% of our international business within the next 5 years."

ImagineX was the first to market with luxury brands in China in 1992, and has spent the past five years building a new generation designer and contemporary fashion business to complement its luxury and lifestyle business to realise the opportunity in the fast-growing affluent middle class that aspires to international fashion.

ImagineX's Vice Chairman & CEO Balbina Wong says, "alice and olivia is a rising star internationally and we're excited to be bringing a new generation designer to a new generation of fashion customers, at a time when they can grow together.

The brand has enormous potential in this market. It is feminine and at the same time eclectic; it has personality and a lifestyle, and it is accessible to the customer who wants to express herself through fashion. And alice + olivia's clear and consistent branding and iconic retail concept ensures that it is easily remembered, which is crucial in an incredibly fast and competitive market such as China," Ms Wong added.
