Hartshill hairdressers raise £4k for school pupils minibus This is Staffordshire --

INTREPID hairdressers have raised £4,000 towards a new minibus for children with learning difficulties after climbing a mountain.

Staff from John Belfield Salon in Hartshill made their way up Mount Snowdon to raise cash for the Merryfields Community Special School in Kidsgrove.

The group were inspired after meeting Olivia Dunn, aged 10, sister of John Belfield's first-year apprentice, Georgia Dunn, aged 16.

Olivia suffers from global developmental delay, a condition which means she is not developing as expected.

Georgia, who has worked at the salon part-time for 18 months, said: "Whenever Olivia comes in to have her hair cut she's always helping sweep up. John says she does a better job than I do.

"When the salon decided they wanted to raise some money for local causes they thought of the school. Olivia loves going to school so it's brilliant that John and the team selected them."

Merryfields supports children aged two to 11 with moderate to severe learning difficulties.

Salon staff started their fund-raising challenge in October, holding cake sales, Christmas present collections and collections of clothes for other charities including the Salvation Army and Elizabeth Trust.

But they set themselves a target of raising £4,000 towards the cost of a new minibus – fitted with a wheelchair ramp and specialist equipment – for the Merryfields school by summer.

Salon owner, John Belfield, who also took part in a sponsored 500m swim in Cumbria's Coniston Lake for the cause, said: "We've always been very involved in supporting local causes but we decided to start really going for it by holding different events to raise cash for charity – we got a bit addicted really.

"And after visiting the school I was really keen to help them get a new minibus for the kids.

"A lot of the donations have come from clients as well as friends. They've been wonderfully supportive and we're very grateful to them.

"It's been a team-building exercise for the staff here and I think everyone has enjoyed themselves. Seeing everyone at the top of Snowdon was a wonderful moment and I was chuffed to finish my swim."

The team of 12 from the salon climbed Snowdon on Sunday in about five hours.

Stylist Emily Obradovic said: "It was really tough, much harder than anyone expected,

"But everyone got to the top and although we were tempted to get the train back down, we all walked down the mountain together as well.

"The walk has brought us closer as a team and I'm really pleased we've raised so much money in a relatively short period of time."

Salon staff handed over a cheque to deputy headteacher Phil Petch and teaching assistants Francesca Meli and Kelly Amphlett yesterday.

Phil, who has worked at the school for three years, said: "We're in desperate need of a new minibus because the ones we had just aren't up to scratch.

"The bus allows us to take children out of the school into a real world to teach them important life skills. This cheque will go a long way to helping cover the cost. We are incredibly grateful to the salon." Reported by This is 4 days ago.

Miss England 2013: can Stamford beauty win the crown? This is Lincolnshire -- A Lincolnshire management student is one of 60 beauties on a mission to be crowned Miss England 2013. Olivia Landin, the 2013 Miss Lincolnshire, will this weekend take part in the contest finals at the Riviera International Centre in Torquay. Stamford-born Olivia, 21, will be tasked with making a dress out of recycled materials and showing off her fitness skills. She will also showcase her modelling abilities and reveal how much money she has raised for charity in the run-up to the finals. The four-day contest, which begins on Thursday June 13, will conclude with a catwalk show on Sunday. Olivia is currently studying for her masters degree in management. She undertook a business studies apprenticeship at a worldwide engineering company, and last year won Miss Every Model. The size eight brunette aspires to own her own business. In addition to the Miss England crown, the winner will enjoy an all-expenses-paid trip to the Miss World final and a holiday in Mauritius. Meanwhile the Mr England finals will be taking place at The Grand Hotel on Torquay seafront. Miss England 2012, Charlotte Holmes from Torpoint, said: "I am delighted that the Miss England 2013 grand final is being held on my home turf and really hope to see another Miss Devon follow in my footsteps." Miss England director Angie Beasley said: "We are really excited to be bringing the Miss England 2013 final to the South West Coast of England for the first time. It is a beautiful part of the country and I think it will make the perfect setting for the grand final. "Charlotte, who came eighth in Miss World last year, has been an amazing Miss England and will certainly be a very hard act to follow, but I am sure we will be able to find someone fantastic to succeed her." * To find out more about Olivia, click here. 'Scandal' Cast On Twitter's Impact And Season 3 Hopes

$

"Scandal" Season 3 is still, painfully, a few months away, but members of the cast were on hand at the recent ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas to reminisce about Season 2, talk Twitter and share their hopes for next year.

One of the many shocking twists of Season 3 was the revelation that Joe Morton's enigmatic B613 director, Rowan, was also Olivia Pope's (Kerry Washington) father. The cast members on hand at the ATX panel -- Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins), Joshua Malina (David Rosen), Dan Bucatinsky (James Novak) -- admitted that they were every bit as floored as the audience when they finally found out. "Joe Morton had been around for months and we had no idea," Lowes said with a laugh. "No one knew. Everyone was completely flabbergasted. I think there was screaming that occurred."

"There's screaming at every table read," director Tom Verica, who was also at the panel, noted. "There were probably five of us who knew when Joe first came on. You wonder, 'Is anyone going to figure this out along the way?'"

As well as learning that the cast members have some famous friends who they'd like to see appear on the show (Malina said his former "West Wing" co-star Allison Janney is "a big fan of the show," while Bucatinsky revealed that "Lisa Kudrow [who he worked with on "Web Therapy" and "The Comeback"] watches every single episode"), here's what else we found out during ATX's "Scandal" panel.

*Cast chemistry is integral to the show's success:*
"We do all really like each other," Lowes said. "I feel like it's a testament to Shonda [Rhimes] because when she was casting the show and putting everybody together, she called previous bosses and checked up on everyone to make sure everyone was a nice person and normal and cool. I think she really gathered a group of people who work hard and we love being there."

Bucatinsky agreed. "We've all become friends and it's very smart. I've never done a scene with Darby [Stanchfield] or Katie; I've known Josh for a long time; but for all of us to become friends and love each other regardless of whether we act together," he added. "On this show, you never know if you're going to wind up in a scene together for the strangest of reasons. I never thought I'd be in a scene with Bellamy [Young] and then I ended up acting with her a lot ... You build these relationships early on that just last regardless of who you run into on a particular episode, so you have chemistry."

*And the cast's social media prowess factors into "Scandal's" success too:*
Lowes admitted that, "The majority of the people on 'Scandal' were not on Twitter before 'Scandal,' aside from Josh and Kerry. But we got this email from Shonda Rhimes a couple weeks before the pilot aired, and she said, 'We'd like you all to join Twitter.' I [had no idea] about this stuff. I'm social media not smart at that kind of thing ... So we all struggled together to learn how to do it, and now, we're so thankful that we are." Lowes later revealed that it had been Washington who suggested to Rhimes that the whole cast should jump on the Twitter bandwagon, a strategy that has certainly paid off.

"There's definitely a correlation between our engagement with Twitter and the fans and the groundswell of 'Scandal' this season," Bucatinsky noted. "Around November, it really started to take off and it was a very steady growth all the way towards the end of the season. Journalists would write about it, we had record-breaking numbers of tweets per minute, we were the biggest cast that would live-tweet during the show, both the East Coast and the West Coast. And what's starting to happen is that people are tuning in, appointment television, to watch 'Scandal' live as opposed to watching it recorded, and that's something that the advertisers were worried about for years. I think the live-tweet situation is going to start drawing people to the live broadcast of the show because you're watching with the cast."

"And because people know we'll ruin the episode for you if you don't watch it as it happens," Malina added with a laugh.

*The cast enjoys lying to us:*
The plots of "Scandal" are closely-guarded secrets, and Lowes admitted that the cast has fun with misleading viewers sometimes. "Sometimes we tweet pictures purposefully leading you down the wrong path. Darby and I were doing this scene where we were breaking into [David's] office and we were dressed in black and all stealth and we took a picture and tweeted it like, 'What do you think we're doing?' and everyone was all, 'Someone's dying!' 'You're dressed for a funeral!' You try to get creative with it."

Bucatinsky's relationship with social media is a little different: "People tweet me more as the character than they do as [me] -- I am spoken to much more as, 'Why are you putting up with that? Why are you letting him talk to you like that? What's wrong with you? Don't tell the world about what he did!' I'm like, 'It's not my fault. I didn't rig a national election.' I find myself responding as if I'm James."

*They also enjoy playing their dark sides:*
Malina spent one episode on the receiving end of viewers' ire after the penultimate episode of Season 2 made it seem like he was a villan, seemingly betraying Olivia Pope and Associates to work with the unhinged Billy Chambers [Matt Letscher]. "Honestly, I loved it," he admitted. "I wish that villainy had lasted a little bit longer because I enjoyed being hated ... I wanted to do the opposite and prolong it somehow. People for so many months were saying, 'He's a gladiator. When are they going to hire him at OPA?' If you ever think you know where it's going, that's your first clue that that's not where it's going. That's not Shonda's style. She will always surprise you. But I enjoyed the malice."

Lowes got to channel her own dark side when Quinn went nuclear on Billy with a drill in the season finale, and the actress was surprised by how she responded to the scene. "I didn't know if Quinn would be into it or not. I just thought. 'OK, when I get that drill in my hand and I go down, she's either going to be into it or not or scared or not.' And it happened and I was like, 'Oh, Quinn's into it.' That's just what came out naturally -- 'This is a high.'"

*They mostly want to be alive next season:*
When asked about their hopes for Season 3, the actors were content to trust Rhimes' vision, with only a few small requests ... "Whenever there's a flashback episode, I'm not in it, so I would like a past," Malina laughed. "Or some evidence that David Rosen was alive [before the series started]." Bucatinsky hoped to see "the balance between work and home more, the baby and maybe getting a sibling, and a spin-off series ..."

Meanwhile, Lowes admitted, "I really just have loved everything so far and there's been so many things that I've never done like drilling and whatever. I trust Shonda in all of her ideas and everyone in that writers room is so brilliant ... and I also just want to be alive."

*The show continues to excel at portraying realistic gay relationships:*
Bucatinsky praised Rhimes' work in making James and Cyrus' (Jeff Perry) relationship about the characters instead of their sexuality. "To me it's the thing that I respect most about Shonda and the shows she creates -- the fact that there is no closet in a Shonda Rhimes show …Everyone in that administration knew, Olivia Pope knows and makes nothing of it. And the issues that Cyrus and James go through -- with the exception of election rigging and taking out hits on each other -- are the issues that a working couple go[es] through ... Becoming a family and becoming parents and how they manage their relationship. It normalizes it, and that fact is almost subversive in its execution so I'm kind of psyched about it."

*Not all actors can handle "Scandal"-speak:*
The show has drawn comparisons to an Aaron Sorkin series for its fast-paced dialogue, and Malina has been fortunate enough to play in both Sorkin's sandbox and Rhimes'.

"I've been very lucky to exist in both the Sorkinverse and Shondaland. There are definitely similarities -- being able to speak very quickly and enunciate are paramount," he said. "There are definitely similarities -- her world is a bit saucier, a bit racier. In terms of the dialogue itself, both very dialogue-heavy, well-written. It's very easy to act when the dialogue is good. When the writing is good, you just get out of the way of it -- you just say the words in the right order and you look like a brilliant actor."

But Verica noted that it's not as easy as the cast makes it look: "It's a different speed, a different pace, and our guest actors -- there are really good actors, established actors, who come in and can't do it. In the audition process, they really have to ... get 'em going in "Scandal"-speak because we need to know whether they can handle it. Being able to go that quick, Katie, you set the bar for everyone."

"Scandal" will return in fall 2013 on ABC.

Chatham Woman Graduates from Centenary Patch Chatham, NJ --

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ -- Olivia Fiumara from Chatham graduated from Centenary College with a Bachelor of Arts degree at its 138th May Commencement at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center recently.

The keynote speaker, Lou Reda, television producer, addressed Centenary's graduating class of 415 students.

Lou Reda Productions is a full-scale television production company with offices located in Easton, Pa., and New York City.

Reda, the company's founder, first made a national name for himself in 1982 when he was the executive producer for the CBS miniseries The Blue and the Gray (starring Gregory Peck as Abraham Lincoln). This began his love for historical programming, and prompted him to move into the nonfiction market.

Over the next 30 years the company produced more than 500 hours of programming for United States and international television networks, including A&E, History, BIO, Discovery, Military Channel, CBS, HDNet and Viacom, while garnering immense praise in the form of a People's Choice Award, eight Emmy nominations, five Cine Golden Eagles and nine Tellys. Among the company's recent productions are the event television series WWII in HD (narrated by Gary Sinise) and Vietnam in HD (narrated by Michael C. Hall), produced for History.

In the 1960s and '70s, Reda managed singers such as Chubby Checker and Johnny Desmond, as well as entertainers like the Amazing Kreskin. In 1971, he created The Amazing World of Kreskin, the first syndicated television series ever for Viacom.

Today, Lou Reda Productions continues to develop and produce entertaining unscripted series and outstanding factual programs. It believes innovative storytelling, engaging characters and high production value regardless of budget are key to the success of any project.

In addition to Reda, Ruth E. Grauert and Norman Worth received Honorary Doctorate degrees in Humane Letters.

Grauert is a lecturer, choreographer and lighting designer. She graduated from Centenary Academy in 1935 and holds a B.A. from Ursinus in 1939 and an M.A. from Columbia in 1941. She studied first at Centenary with Herring and Couch and then with Holm, Graham, Nikolais, Sokolow, Kashmann, Guidone, Stewart and Weidman. She was a member of Nikolais Hartford Company from 1942-43; assistant to Nikolais from 1948-1988; stage director for Murray Louis from 1953-1970; lighting designer and stage manager for Phyllis Lamhut, Beverly Blossom and others from 1948 on; and she taught lighting at the Nik/Lou lab from 1948-1995. In 1979 and 1980, she directed the company of Compagnie de la Danse Contemporaine d'Angers in France. NAPW Los Angeles, CA Local Chapter Learned How to More Effectively Use Social Media at April Networking Meeting

National Association of Professional Women Los Angeles, CA Local Chapter hosted a social media seminar presented by Chapter President Ruth Garcia-Corrales in April.

Garden City, NY (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Members and guests of the NAPW Los Angeles, CA Local Chapter gathered on April 17th for a professional networking meeting.

The group of professional women enjoyed an evening of getting to know one another, supporting each other’s professional endeavors and networking.

Attendees also got expert tips from Chapter President Ruth Garcia-Corrales when she delivered a presentation on how to more effectively use social media.

President Ruth Garcia-Corrales kicked off the meeting with a warm welcome to members and guests.

"Social Networking and Marketing has grown to become vital to business, no matter the size. It's a great way to get your name out there and directly communicate with your target market!" said President Ruth Garcia-Corrales.

She then informed the group that according to the organization's bylaws her two-year term was up, and a new election was going to have to happen. Without one moment’s hesitation, members unanimously voted her back into this office.

Ms. Garcia-Corrales began her social media presentation with a survey of how many people at the meeting had Facebook profiles. That answer was impressive; only one member did not have one.

The Chapter President asked the group if they knew that less than 16 percent (on average) of their fans see posts because of EdgeRank, which determines what pages it will show on their News Feeds.

Ms. Garcia-Corrales told the members and guests that if Facebook doesn’t post all their posts to all their friends, EdgeRank is why.

There are three elements that EdgeRank reviews: affinity, weight and time decay.

Affinity is measured by the relationship of the user with person posting—this is based on frequency of contact; frequency of logins on Facebook; the number of likes, comments, shares, etc. The more interaction between the user and the person posting, the higher your affinity, she told the audience.

Weight is based on the different objects; for example, photos have more weight than links, and comments are four times “heavier” than likes.

A newer post is more likely to appear than an old one, she told the group.

“For more engagement, posts with less than 80 characters will be seen 27 percent more often than longer posts, according to a Buddy Media Study,” said President Garcia-Corrales. “Asking questions double the possibilities of participation, and photos draw more likes. When planning your post, think of how to make it more interesting.”

The Chapter President went on to give the group of professional women a number of examples for could be making their Facebook posts more effective.

The following attendees introduced themselves at the April Los Angeles Local Chapter meeting:

Olivia Lam: Graphic Artist/Designer; Tara Donato: Business Development and Client Services Executive, BusinessTalk; Maureen Teppedino: Home-based Business Owner in Venice; Beth Kandell is a Nutritionist and an Entrepreneur, Simply Fine Gourmet; Anita Finlay is a professional Actor; Anita showed the group her book, Dirty Words on Clean Skin which is #1 on Amazon.com in the Women-in-Politics genre; Daphne Germaine: Survival Kit Creator and Mentor; Jeannine Chanin-Penn: Creative Director and Writer at HBO; Lorri Herman, Executive Regional Vice President and Independent Consultant for Arbonne; Carol Johnson is a Professional Singer/Songwriter/Actress, who has written songs for the Jackson Five and Motown Records; Eileen Licerio: Special-Projects Liaison for Tribridge; Dr. Estie (Esther) B. Hess is a Psychotherapist at Center For the Developing Mind, where she works with children. Daisy Marks speaks passionately about her cause célèbre. She sits on the board of Achievable, a clinic that provides services to low-income families, individuals and especially children; Lisa-Catherine Cohen: Renaissance Artist, Author of "The Loaded Cufflink: Ten Ways to Survive and Forgive a Parent’s Rage," and Teacher of a 15-week course called Guided Autobiography™ at a retirement home in Reseda; Marlene Granderson: CEO and Creator of Granderson IGI Holdings, Marlene is a Real Estate Investment Specialist. Daphne Chocolatier; Ruth Klein: Branding Strategist and Productivity Coach and Author of six bestsellers, titles include, The De-Stress Diva and Time Management Secrets for Working Women; Ruth Garcia-Corrales: Los Angeles Chapter President and Advertising and Marketing Manager of Curacao.

Is there a shortage of TV actors?

$
0

Channel hop on any given evening and the chances are you will see the same faces, but in different roles. Do you have a favourite overworked star?

With so many long-running drama series criss-crossing our TV screens, the modern malaise of the same actors cropping up in multiple fictions is becoming ever more noticeable.

The problem was pinpointed a couple of weeks back when the actor Michael McElhatton appeared in two shows that went out concurrently on two different channels and had an enormous impact on both storylines. Anyone watching one after the other had every right to be confused.

If you don't recognise the name, you would recognise the noble forehead and striking features if you followed ace BBC2 serial-killer drama The Fall, in which he played Belfast's corrupt chief of police, Rob Breedlove, and season three of HBO's Game Of Thrones on Sky Atlantic, in which he is Roose Bolton, venal Bannerman of the North and Lord of the Dreadfort.

Thanks to the lottery of scheduling, it turned out to be a memorable night for McElhatton, an actor who's been on our screens since the early 90s and also writes (notably, RTÉ comedy Paths To Freedom). However, his duality was problematic for those of us in the business of suspending our disbelief.

McElhatton, Dublin born and based, is one of a number of Irish and Northern Irish actors in the American-made Game Of Thrones, large chunks of which are filmed in Northern Ireland. The Fall, too, was shot in the Northern Irish capital. This is great news for local talent. But GoT's vast cast means incidental appearances from countless recognisable faces, statistically bound to be in something else at the same time.

Further down The Fall's cast was Belfast's Ian McElhinney, as gangster Morgan Monroe. He, too, is in Game Of Thrones, as knight Ser Barriston Selmy, also seen in last Monday night's episode. Viewers who watch too much telly, as I do, were also forced to toggle between Archie Panjabi as a pathologist in The Fall and as a private investigator in long-running US legal drama The Good Wife, on More4.

It's more noticeable when lead actors take on too much TV work (and if the actors of my acquaintance are anything to go by, fear of "resting" is enough to convince them to take any job that's offered). Thus, within a week of ITV whodunnit Broadchurch ending, both its detectives, the in-demand Olivia Colman and David Tennant, appeared in different roles - respectively, The Suspicions of Mr Whicher and The Politician's Husband. Tennant barely had time to highlight his hair. The redoubtable Rebecca Front fronted two consecutive new comedies two Thursdays ago: Up The Women on BBC3 and Psychobitches on Sky Arts. And anyone playing catch-up with Friday Night Lights on Sky Atlantic and Nashville on More4 has to constantly refocus between Connie Britton as a Texas high school guidance counsellor and a Tennessee country star.

But it's usually the supporting players ("guest" and "recurring" cast, to use the US caste system) who create unwitting daisy chains. Eric Close is mayor Teddy Conrad in Nashville, but also lawyer Travis Tanner in legal dramedy Suits (shown here on Dave). We had the measure of Gina Torres as law partner Jessica Pearson in Suits but have recently had to adjust to her as FBI wife Bella Crawford in Hannibal on Sky Living. Jessica's partner on Suits – played by another Northern Irishman, Conleth Hill – is simultaneously baldy eunuch Varys in Game Of Thrones. Long-form US shows = huge casts = inevitable crossover.

I could go on. Dallas Roberts was a conflicted scientist in AMC's The Walking Dead and Julianna Margulies' gay brother in The Good Wife; Michael Huisman an itinerant musician in HBO's Treme but a successful producer in Nashville, while Kim Dickens, a bolshy chef in Treme, is Shelby, a repentant mum in Friday Night Lights ...

Anyone else have a pet dual-action actor on TV currently?

I enjoy pretending they're playing the same character, but in a different setting. For example, David Bradley, star of Broadchurch and Game Of Thrones: he left his newsagent's shop in Dorset after being wrongly accused of being a paedophile and relocated to Westeros to start a new life as a polygamist lord with a nasty grudge … Reported by guardian.co.uk 5 days ago.

LOOK: Miss USA Winners Bare All For PETA

Four Miss USA crown-holders became the latest faces -- and bodies -- of PETA's anti-fur campaign.

In a video for PETA, the Miss USA winners posed naked alongside a Miss USA sash and crown to lend their support to the animal rights organization.

*SCROLL TO WATCH*

In addition to baring it all for the PETA ad, Susie Castillo, Shandi Finnessey, Shanna Moakler and Alyssa Campanella also pledged to go fur-free in their own lives.

"The more I learned of the torture that animals go through in the name of fashion, I just think its so unnecessary," Miss USA 2003 winner Susie Castillo said in the video to explain why she decided to pose for PETA. "It's unbelievable actually."

The nude ad, shot by photographer Fadil Berisha, is the latest in the series, which has featured a multitude of celebrities and public figures. Last year, actress Olivia Munn, talk show host Wendy Williams and reality TV personality Evelyn Lozada all stripped down to support the cause.

Watch the four Miss USA winners participate in the campaign in the slightly-NSFW video and see PETA ad below. Reported by Huffington Post 5 days ago.
